I can’t even think of something fun to blog about. Good news is, I don’t owe money. Huzzah! If you can, avoid being self-employed. Unless you are [INSERT FAMOUS, RICH AUTHOR AND ENTREPRENEUR NAMES HERE]. There is little pay-off, although I do enjoy working in my PJs and answering to no one (except my clients, of course). Since I write fiction for free, non-fiction is where I make that butter and bread (very small loaf). I have written for the San Francisco Chronicle, Marin Magazine, Poets & Writers, San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, and ForeWord Magazine, among others. Mostly book reviews, a few essays, interviews, even encyclopedia entries. Stuff like that. I was a caption writer for the America 24/7 photojournalism project. I am the Other Voices section editor of The Noe Valley Voice, if you care to submit poetry, fiction, or artwork. I’d gladly consider it. But what are the common threads between genres and what the heck is genre anyway? In the world of creative writing, we tend to talk in terms of three genres: fiction (the made-up stuff), non-fiction (the stuff based on real life such as a memoir) and poetry. The National Writers Union defines genre by three very broad groups: the book division, for both fiction and non-fiction writers, the journalism division, for magazine and newspaper writers, and the biz-tech division, for business and technology writers. They put the poets in a group all their own – lucky devils. Perhaps you may be more familiar with genre in such terms as “Sci-fi,” “Chick-Lit,” “Fantasy,” Horror,” ‘Mystery,” “Historical”..etc. These are all sub-genres within the book division. Author Michelle Mclean offers a great explanation of each of these sub-genres in her blog How to Define Genre. I write in all three of the genre groups; fiction (book division), magazine articles (journalism division) and business content writing (biz-tech division). When you upload an album you can create a mini-story that is eye-catching and provocative. Starting a business is risky. Horribly, terrifyingly risky. Nearly all new businesses fail — that's the official statistic, right? Some say 4 out of 5, some say as many as 95%. Successful entrepreneurs have a different kind of DNA from the rest of us. Ice water runs through their veins. They thrive on risk. The more insane the odds, the better they like it. For those of us who have families, or who just don't feel like living on ramen for the next four years, we're probably better off keeping the day job. Do you believe any of those? Because I call B.S. on all of them. Life is riskyDay jobs are very risky. You're making a bet that your company is well-run enough to survive the economy's twists and turns, and that they're always going to want to keep you around. Either of those can change in a heartbeat, and you're left without a safety net. Crossing the street is risky. Using an ATM is risky. Having kids is almost unbearably risky. Almost 100 people in the U.S. are killed by lightning and bees every year. Going outside: super risky. You can cut down a lot of risk by getting a job at the post office and spending all of your non-work hours in front of your television. And if that sounds like your idea of a life well-lived, you should go do that. For the rest of us, let's talk about intelligent riskMichael Ellsberg, in his terrific new book The Education of Millionaires, devotes a juicy section to the myth of the extreme riskiness of starting a business … or at least, to the perception of extreme risk.

If you mention at Thanksgiving that you’re thinking about starting a business, your Aunt Mary will definitely dredge them up. Great products and services deserve great marketing, so they’ll find the audiences they can help. Your brilliant business idea is only as good as your ability to sell it. You can choose to get over itBelieving that marketing and selling are for "other people" is a little bit like hanging on to the idea that the earth is flat. It's an idea. (A wrong idea.) You can decide to get over it. And when you do that, you can manage your risk to a degree that you never thought possible. You can learn something about copywriting and the techniques of direct response. This is simply the art of taking effective salesmanship (in text, video, or audio) and getting it to a larger audience. It's going out and asking for the sale, instead of hoping it shows up somehow. I don't care if you use your copywriting skills online, in TV or radio ads, in flyers, by direct mail, or by carving your message into the moon. You can also learn how to use content marketing to make selling a lot easier, by showing potential customers how much they would enjoy your product or service. By showing you aren't a sleaze. And by using creativity and talent to attract attention to your business, instead of paying tons of money for advertising. You may never become a ninjaNot everyone who studies copywriting and content marketing gets good at it. But if you even become marginally competent, you'll be ahead of 90% of your competitors. You don't have to be faster than the bear — you just have to be better than the other guy. And by making a serious study of marketing (which, by the way, starts with the art of creating products that customers truly want to buy), you'll learn what really good sales and marketing look like. And that means that if you choose to, you can hire or partner with people who are truly masters. So how do you get started?First, I’m never going to tell you to "leap and the net will appear." That's just not smart. Don't quit your day job or radically restructure 100% of your business because you have a "passion" for a certain approach or topic. Self-help gurus will tell you to follow your dreams, and I think that's excellent advice. But follow them the smart way.

You love books. Printed books. And like most writers, you're probably an avid reader who has spent thousands of hours with print books over your lifetime. Perhaps you're mourning their passing. No, print isn't quite dead, but it is struggling. And when publishing is fully reborn, it will be utterly different. As a writer, you've never stood in front of more opportunity than you do right now. As a copywriter, you are uniquely positioned to take advantage of this publishing revolution. For those who believe ringing the death knell is premature, I'll call the honorable voice of History to the stand. Amazon, iTunes, and the new price of reading anythingAmazon recently lowered the base price of its Kindle eReader to $79. The day Apple lowered the price of its game changing iPod to $99 was the day international opinion shifted and digital music downloads went wholesale. $79 is a remarkable price, and it will lead to a ridiculous number of Kindles under a countless number of trees this coming Christmas. And of course, millions of downloads will follow. I should say, millions more, because as of this spring, ebook downloads have already overtaken print books sold on Amazon. You must make a decision. Choose to focus on what you're losing, fixed on an unchangeable past, or embrace the reality of a stunning tomorrow. Trust me, I love books too …I love their scent and the weight in my hand. I love turning the pages and leaving half-read volumes scattered around my house. I love the dog-eared pages. I've read thousands of books and will read thousands more. But the way I'm reading them has changed forever, and I'm happy about that. Books are meant to deliver information. The old way was amazing, but clunky. We printed, published, and distributed at the speed of ice floes, requiring plenty of paper, ink and fuel. I won't pretend there isn't an inherent loss in transitioning the physical book to the digital container. But that's like lamenting the loss of winter thawing to spring. The writer runs this show (really)Information can now be delivered in an instant and is infinitely scalable. Writers no longer need permission to follow their dreams or publish edgier, riskier — and for the reader, more rewarding — material. Writers who understand this and focus on all we're gaining will be standing beneath a hard rain of amazing possibility. Good writers have nothing to lose and everything to win. Every new innovation in books and publishing will ultimately deliver more words into the hands of more readers. Some of those words can be yours. For writers like me, and hopefully you, who have been waiting in the wings, this is our chance. It's exactly what we've been waiting for. The gatekeepers are MIA. They’ll probably be back — in some form or another. But for now, this is our chance to run, as far and as fast as we can. It's our chance to push things as far as they will go. A chance to make a name for ourselves. Many of us will fall, but we still have plenty of time to get up, dust off and try again. Copywriters and marketers have an invaluable opportunity to witness a new market taking primordial shape. While the old rules of pricing and positioning still hold, there are bound to be some surprises teaching us new ways to sell, and deliver value to our readers. These are tools most writers would kill for. Skills that not only help you create page-turning fiction, but also help you develop an eager audience. Our generation of writers are about to do something special. Our story, as we write itMy writing partner, David Wright, and I have just finished a snow-cone-cool serialized fiction project, Yesterday's Gone. Though the idea of serialized fiction has been around since Dickens, we're moving the publishing concept to the digital page. Dave and I modeled Yesterday's Gone after superbly scripted television, a format which neatly fits everything from how modern consumers are buying bite-sized content, to the get-noticed pricing of $0.99 that John Locke has ridden to sales of more than one million Kindle downloads in just five months. The self-published authors mentioned above who have had phenomenal success on Kindle have had multiple titles in the same market, priced low enough to blow up BIG. John Locke didn't even start marketing until his fifth book was finished. Was I willing to write five full books at .99 each? No. Was I willing to team with my writing partner to write one remarkable adventure, split into pieces, just like they do on every TV show I'm addicted to? Hell yeah! I jumped in with both feet and a smile, then surfaced with the best work I've ever done. A word of warningThe Kindle revolution is not a gold rush, though there is indeed gold in them thar hills. If you cannot put out a quality book, you will fail. If you build your publishing business on PLR (private label rights), you will fail, even if you win for a while. If you cannot entertain your readers, build a relationship with them, or fuel their excitement enough to help you spread the word, then you will lose your spot on the bestseller list to other writers who can, even if you're the “better” writer. Even if you do everything right, you can still fail. Luck still plays a part in writing success. But failure is temporary. If I'm not lucky now, I'll be lucky later. I won't wait for it to find me. Some of the "luckiest" people I've met are simply the most undaunted. Write as well as you can, gather your audience around the strength of your voice, and be patient. Keep writing, even if your first, second or third books aren't home runs. The power of foreverEverything you publish to Kindle and other eReaders will be there forever. Yesterday's Gone isn't an info-product, it's an awesome (in my opinion) piece of fiction. My children will be earning royalties for many yesterdays, even after I'm long gone. We all have our predictions, guesses and speculations, but this is one story where there are no spoilers. We're at the edge of a cliffhanger without an ending in sight. Whatever it is, is sure to be a complete surprise. Whatever happens, Copyblogger readers can win. Copywriters, in particular, can win. There will be more work for everyone. Not just writers, but editors, graphic designers, marketers and consultants, as smart writers invest in quality service providers to help them bring their books to market. The future of reading is different from the one you used to know, but it's also better. Sure, we’ve got email and blogs and social media and Skype and the occasional contact via an actual phone, but in real-life terms we’re pretty isolated. Traveling is a pain, and the trips are expensive, but I go because being in those environments is totally worth the inconvenience. It’s necessary to make my business grow. Attending conferences is nothing short of awesome, and you should do it if you’re able. These are the times to soak up new information, when the innovations and inspiration of others can’t help but rub off on you. Every time you go to a conference, you return home with new tools that can make your business more profitable. But what if you can’t quite manage to get to live events? Luckily, there’s a solution. How to attend a conference you can’t attendTravel sucks, especially since the airlines began their sadistic sociological experiment to determine how much travelers will put up with before cracking. You have to pay for your bags. You have to put your deodorant into exactly the right kind of clear baggie or they’ll throw it away. The crappy snack on the flight costs six dollars. On one flight, the man to my left was spilling into my seat and the man to my right was throwing up the entire time. Transportation is expensive. Hotels are expensive. You’ve got to put the kids in the kennel and send the dogs to grandma’s. (Right?) You’ve got to find a way to put your business on hold … if it can survive being put on hold. If this is what you want to do professionally, then you should be paid for it. A dirty little secret of this business is that many writers that earn a full-time income by putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, aren't any better than the writers who don't make a dime. It doesn't have to be this way. Let me be clear, you’re not going to find any "get rich quick" ideas in this post. But those writers that earn do have a secret weapon … They know where to go to get paid. (A quick note before we start — all of these assume you’re actually good — that you’ve put the hours in to master your craft. Obvious, right? So now that that’s out of the way, let’s get rolling.) Start with your networkMost writers hate the idea of picking up the phone and calling up the people who are closest to them. They see it as a breach of social decorum — after all, these are your friends and family, not your marketing team! The truth is that your close network is very first place that you should look. They like you, they trust you, and they want you to succeed. If you were in their shoes, wouldn't you want an opportunity to help out? Here's how you can give them that opportunity:

So many choices … where to start?Undoubtedly, there are a lot of options outlined in this post. And even more undoubtedly, a lot of them involve lots and lots of work — again, there's no "get rich quick" idea hidden in this post! So … where should you start? What's your best bet? The truth is that I don't know. I can tell you what's worked for me — but we're different people, with different strengths, experiences, and circumstances. What you really need is some hard data about what lots of people do, and what seems to be working well across the board. I don't have those numbers to give you.
