Top Misc Content on Internet

Yeah, write!

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 04:26 AM PDT

With journalists being laid off in droves across the globe, and thanks to the ease of self-publishing on the internet, paid gigs for those of us who still write professionally are scarcer than ever before.

A few years ago, I sub-edited a series of articles about finance and was paid £10 a pop to produce finished 500-word pieces. It was very easy work, though the time/compensation ratio still barely added up to minimum wage. I was ok about doing that stuff as it augmented grown-up editing work coming in from elsewhere, and the extra money paid off several household bills.

However, when mainstream newspapers aren’t even answering your story pitches, let alone rejecting them, looking at content writing opportunities on the web inevitably enters your mind. A quick search then serves as a reminder that price – sometimes down to less than a dollar per article – trumps quality.

If they accept you, after vetting of work samples, sites like Suite 101 can offer serious peanuts – but only if sufficient tens of thousands of people click on any article that an “editor” has deemed good enough for publication. There are many sites operating on models similar to Suite 101, usually involving an undefined percentage of Google Adwords revenue.

So what joy to receive the following email message (employing truly splendid grammar) from EzDia earlier this week:

“We Are Looking for Article Writers for our Ongoing Projects. We will pay $15 for first 2 articles, after that we will pay $4 each article, payment will made weekly after work completion and verification by copyscape and dupe free amount can be discussed on a conversation.”

Imagine a life tied to a laptop for 100+ hours every week – assuming your bids for “projects” are successful – did I say you might have to bid? – in order to drown marginally more slowly in your sad life. Hey, but you can get your name known and consolidate a reputation as someone who produces work cheaper than chips!

Welcome to the 21st century and to a realisation that writing for a livable wage is neither possible nor glamorous. If you would consider paying £9,000 fees per year to study for a journalism qualification, would you also be happy knowing your annual income, certainly as a freelance, would likely add up to less than that?
