Little Kitten - Tim Minchin On Women

Posted: 06 Apr 2009 05:34 AM PDT

From The New Scotsman: "What I know about women: Tim Minchin"I'm a ladies' man, no question. Not in the Russell Brand kind of way, quite the contrary in fact. But I love women; always have. I like warm, laughing, open women because they hug me and I like that because their skin is soft and they have boobs. I like cold, aloof women who are hard to impress because it's so satisfying when they smile, eventually. I like little petite women because unlike little petite men, they tend to be totally h

iPhone Is The Killer Mobile Social Networking Device

Posted: 06 Apr 2009 05:20 AM PDT

The iPhone is the killer social networking device when mobile. The ability to easily and comfortably access email as well as a variety of popular social networking sites using native iPhone applications places the device squarely in the center of the social media triangle. While there are plenty of additional uses for the device, it almost seems pointless - why bother owning an iPhone if your usage goal does not involve some form of social networking ? It would appear that the iPhone

Muse Gone Amok ~ Getting the Most Out of Your Writing Day

Posted: 06 Apr 2009 03:35 AM PDT

It figures that about the time I embark upon a new journey, the muse decides to take a holiday to Spain. Well, I’m assuming that’s where she went—that’s where I’d be if I were a muse gone amuk. I just hope she returns home soon. Without my muse I am simply a depression-proned, bi-polar chick. With her, I am brilliant, creative, and eccentric. But muses take breaks; it happens to the best of us. The trick is learning how to keep them around as much as possible. How to get the most out of our muse in any given writing day.

The key is structure; having a set daily schedule. Creativity flows when there are boundaries applied. I know perhaps that doesn’t seem to make sense; but think of your muse as a child. Children crave structure. They behave better, are healthier, and tend to be happier when there are boundaries set and schedules to follow—especially when those boundaries and schedules are designed around their specific needs and desires. Rules for rules’ sake accomplish little; but rules set for the purpose of providing a nurturing structure, can work wonders—for you kids and your muse.

Take me for instance. My muse is a morning kind of girl; which is a bit odd, because I am not. But I know that my best writing is always done in the AM. So I try to start my writing day early. I also know that my muse tends to quit at around 3:oo PM, whether I’m finished writing or not. So, my structure takes that into account. I do the bulk of my writing of a morning and schedule other tasks for my afternoons—research, accounting, correspondence, social networking, etc. This is my schedule. When I depart from it, my writing suffers; as does my stress-level.

No one has a great writing day every day. Your muse, like mine, will have its moments. There will be days when you’re sitting in front of that computer trying to write and you’ll just know… your muse is on a beach somewhere in Spain; probably hanging out with mine. But, if you set a schedule; create some structure for your writing day, then you can minimise the effects of the muse gone amok. This applies whether you write full-time or part; whether you’re new or have been writing for years; whether you write for personal pleasure or for profit. To get the most out of your writing day; the key is structure.
