Hey Jupiter

Posted: 02 Jul 2009 02:55 PM PDT

I'm very happy to announce the public release of my Hey Jupiter sock pattern! The sock took me a little longer than usual to design and knit, but that was partially because I wanted to wallow in the experience and truly enjoy it. Ultimately, I decided I wanted a pattern that would flow down the sock, much like the lava the color was named after. I added a few yarn overs to make it fancy, and some twisted ribbing to allow for some stretch and intricate details, and voila. The design features a

One More Thing -- Hoopsvine.com Interview with Jay Bilas

Posted: 02 Jul 2009 02:49 PM PDT

Before I leave you for the Fourth of July celebration weekend, I wanted to make sure that everybody checks out the Hoops Vine interview with Jay Bilas about the NBA Draft. The Hoops Vine brand name has been around for a while but the new and improved Hoops Vine social basketball network is a growing entity powered by the genius and hard work of Lang Greene. Lang is a friend of Talkhoops and has even let me be so kind as to let me answer a mailbag for his readers (last April) . Lang is a

ID Cards: Communications Genius in Action

Toby Stevens writes on his excellent blog at Computer Weekly: I'd like to offer my congratulations to the Communications team at the Identity and Passport Service for successfully pulling off one of the most audacious and downright clever pieces of media manipulation I've ever witnessed. If I ever find myself in charge of a large and unpopular public service project, I'm headhunting the lot of you into my team. Here's why. Yesterday afternoon I was tied up running a small conference when

My Apple Store Experience: Revisiting the checkout process

Posted: 02 Jul 2009 02:48 PM PDT

The Checkout Process I had a strange experience yesterday that I thought I would share. I visited one of my favorite retail stores, Apple (Note: A distant 2nd to Starbucks). Anyway, it was late in the evening and I needed to quickly purchase a power adapter replacement. Immediately upon entering the store, I immediately noticed a few things: 1. The genius bar . This is the area where you can sign-up and receive technical support from one of the Apple 'geniuses'. The store was rec

Grandmaster Flash is a DJ Hero, plays DJ Hero

If anyone belongs in a game called DJ Hero , it's Grandmaster Flash. The legendary musician has been at the forefront of hip-hop for basically forever, and is credited with inventing the art of messing with records to create noise, upon which the entire game is based. In addition to appearing in-game, Flash contributed his own mixes to the soundtrack. In the video above, you can hear a segment of his mashup of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and N.E.R.D.'s "Lapdance." After the break, we've emb

The Evolution of the Steroidal Female Bodybuilder

Posted: 02 Jul 2009 02:37 PM PDT

For most of the eighties, there did not exist many women juicers in the world as is the case now. Most of the gyms in this time of our history were very masculine dominated dungeons where the gym amenities and equipments happened to be overtly a male domain, as it was mired in a state where accommodation of female clientèle was next to impossible. The few females, a brand unique everywhere were involved in this dilapidated gyms and working out at their own serious risks. Many washrooms in gyms w

We need identity cards, and soon

The new Home Secretary writes on the Guardian Comment is Free web site: The introduction of identity cards is a simple means of helping you, and I, protect our unique identity from fraudsters. Identity fraud costs the UK economy £1.2bn on average each year and causes misery for tens of thousands who fall victim. At a cost of just £30, the identity card is a cheap way of helping fight back. So, despite the headlines that would have readers think otherwise, I'm not scrapping identity cards –

Most leaders seem to not manage enough. Even if someone resolves to embrace an integrated 'people strategy' it comes off as dodgy, temporary, or insincere. If you are genuinely interested in developing the skills and character of your people, consider asking some of these questions on a regular basis. You'll see an improving culture, improving skills, and decrease your Excedrin habit. Can this person clearly articulate his/her role in accomplishing the vision of the company? Does this

,uDancing About Architecture

Posted: 02 Jul 2009 09:30 AM PDT

I just published a novel about music. Early in the process of writing it, I was warned by a similarly music-obsessive friend that "writing about music is like dancing about architecture."[1] Since that first somewhat menacing reminder, I've heard the line frequently. At first blush, the claim is a smugly dismissive one: verbal descriptions of music are doomed to be pointlessly, perhaps even ridiculously, inferior to actual music. As a reader, I resisted this idea; it just felt false, though I couldn't quite say why. But as a writer, this assertion paralyzed me: I didn't want to waste two or three years trying to produce something that could not be produced.[2] I tried to put aside the line's foundational snobbery ("My music is too ineffable for your inky art"), and then, reassuringly, it seemed like nothing more than a truism: words are words and music is music. And perfume is perfume; paintings are paintings; facial features are facial features. Yet writers are never counseled agains

This genre has nothing to do with journalists opening a window into what life is like for women today. It does women no favours at all. It is entirely about perpetuating an editor's misogynistic image of what women are like (self-hating, self-obsessed)
