| Do SEO - Get seen, Get known and SELL online Posted: 30 Aug 2009 12:30 AM PDT If your site doesn't show up in the first few pages of results when someone is looking for information or products, you are not likely to get many visitors. No visitors means no sales, so putting some time, effort and (often) money into improving your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is crucial. What Have you got? There are a lot of factors that go into making your site rank highly in the search pages. However, the most important (and most often overlooked) is having important, relevant information on your site. It doesn't matter if your website is the first one in the search results if it isn't what the searcher is actually looking for. You might get a lot of visitors, but they will all open the site, scroll down quickly, and close it – which doesn't do anything to help your profits. Creating backlinksThe most common (as well as over-rated and over-used) way of attracting search engines to your site is creating backlinks. These are links that lead people from other sites onto yours. However, building these backlinks can often be either extremely time consuming or extremely costly. There are many other easy (and free) ways to make sure the search engines will find your site relevant – and if other people find your site useful, the backlinks will create themselves as people talk about your site on blogs and forums. Write articles about your products and company with links to your website in it. KeywordsYou can fill it with relevant keywords – making sure they fit comfortably into the text and don't seem forced. To do this, you need to do some research on keywords and make up a list of keywords that relate to your site. This list doesn't need to be long, but each term should be one that someone searching for the information you are offering might type into a search box. If you can manage to fit these terms into your articles multiple times without making it sound like you're deliberately forcing keywords into your text, it will boost your page rank considerably. This is especially true if you use your key words in the first and last paragraphs of your text, since the search engines are programmed to look in the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Meta descriptionsIncorporating meta descriptions and a unique title on each of your pages can also go a long way towards attracting potential readers. Meta descriptions will show up in the search results, and therefore need to accurately describe your site. This is another place where you should incorporate the keywords I mentioned before. Another extremely important aspect is alt tags, especially if you have a website with a lot of pictures. Search engines can read text, but they can't see images. Adding alt tags to your coding whenever you add in an image will let the search engine know what is depicted in the image. This will make your site also appear in image search results, which can be extremely useful depending on what you are promoting. And finally, you need to make sure that the search engines will not filter your sites out of the results due to lack of original content. If your site doesn't contain enough text, Google might file it away as a "supplemental page" (meaning it won't show on the initial search results), and if your site is too similar to others it might be filtered out completely. You may not have all the time for all this. Your next option however should be to hire a professional copywriter to do this for you at a very affordable rate. Your copywriter must of course understand SEO and must be a master in keyword research and placement. |
