Article Writing- Everything you Need to Know

Posted: 23 Jan 2010 07:29 PM PST

Writing an article really isn’t that hard- you just need something to write about. But writing a great article takes some skill. If you want to make your work stand out from the rest, follow these useful tips for writing great articles and landing great article writing jobs.

Tip #1- Choose a topic you are passionate about. It is so much easier to write a great article if the subject interests you. Find your niche and become an expert in the field. Granted, it may be harder to find work if you only focus on one or two niches but you may be able to command more money for high quality work.

Tip #2- Make the article flow. When you are writing an article, it is almost like telling a story. You want the reader to understand the article from beginning to end and not have to jump from top to bottom to make sense of it. Every good article will have an introduction which explains what the article is about, a middle with all of the important details, and a conclusion to pull it all together.

Tip #3- Make your paragraphs transition into the next. By this, I mean each subsequent paragraph should somehow tie into the previous paragraph. If you need to end a section abruptly, use headers to clearly identify each new section so your audience doesn’t get lost.

Tip #4- Use synonyms. No reader wants to see the same word fifty times in an article. Microsoft Word has a great built-in thesaurus which will provide you with lists of alternative word choices. Just make sure the word you choose still makes sense.

Tip #5- Stay on topic. If the material isn’t relevant to the topic of your article, omit it. You shouldn’t be writing an article about raising a puppy and venture off into talking about kittens. It just wouldn’t make sense and it will hurt your credibility as a good writer.

Tip #6- If you are asked to write about something which you know nothing about, do some research! I cannot stress this enough! There is nothing worse than submitting an article which is completely off base.

Tip #7- If you are writing for someone else, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. You want to make sure the work you are submitting is what your client is expecting. Giving them what they want will keep them coming back to you for future assignments.

Tip #8- Use the proper wordage. Make sure you have a good understanding of which words to use. Then instead of than, the correct your or you’re, etc. Many time Microsoft Word will catch this but there are cases in which it won’t.

Tip #9- Proofread everything! You do not want to submit work which has not been proofread. A tip for proper proofreading is to read it aloud. This way you will catch any errors in your writing.

Tip #10- Never plagiarize! If you need to quote something in your work be sure to give due credit to the original author or source. Most article buyers will check your work with plagiarism finders to make sure you are not trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own.

By following these simple tips, you will be well on your way to writing great articles. Once you have the art mastered, you are sure to bring in top dollar for all of your work!
