The C Word: How context can inform our design process | Carsonified

M has been working quite feverishly on his own projects, which, he has impressively been cultivating lately.

As for myself, I’ve spent a great deal of time pondering the whole thing. Where do I want to go with this? What do I want to do with it? Do I want to write content forever? Probably not. Do I enjoy it? For the most part, yes. I can say I’ve learned more about things I had never quite imagined myself even being curious about- which, well, that’s always kind of neat.

I’ve also discovered that when you talk of doing half way decently- you get hit with requests for how you’ve done it. I don’t mind helping out, at all, everyone needs a hand up, every now and again. I do mind getting the five paragraph “Why you should help me find work” shpeil. Call me insensitive- but I am well aware as to why people are seeking work. Seen the economy lately? It’s not hard to figure out.

I run a Facebook group for this, and I try to direct people to that. I cannot just give someone work- which, seems to be the assumption more often than not. That, I have a really hard time understanding. I’m only rarely in a position to outsource work- usually this involves clients who are aware that I may do so, and trust that I outsource to people that will be able to step up to the plate well. Other times, when I suggest web sites to find work, I get sort of grumbled at because, well, the pickings are slim, when you’re getting your feet wet- and people apparently think they can pay you complete crap and that’s okay. I don’t think it is okay, which is why I do not outsource all that often.

If you’re a web content writer- what’s your take on outsourcing? Do you feel that when you’re in a position to do so, it is ethical?

Also, I’m curious as to your take on content mills and the way that they pay? If you feel they are unethical and underpaying- which, believe me, I do- what solutions do you propose for new content writers? Alternatives? All too often I see these posts about how abysmally paying these places are- but when you’re broke, what do you do? Feed your family (Or yourself, insert scenario here) or hang on to your ethics?

For me, when I realized how crappy these places were, I looked for alternatives and began reading around about bidding on work, for myself. On ’selling’ my own brand, so to speak. I was not pleased with the level of work for the level of pay, so I set out to find my own clients, get my own gigs- sort of get that middle man out of the way. However, every time I see these posts about how writers shouldn’t settle- I’ve yet to see any one of them address that point. What do you do? (If you have links to ones that do, I’m all ..not ears. Eyeballs. Ha! Do share.)
