Death by SEO – Keyword Overkill

Death by SEO – Key Word Overkill

My writing career has taken an unexpected turn since moving to the UK. Instead of the steady stream of corporate work, it's now more like a steady trickle. Therefore, I supplement with writing articles designed for Internet publication – most of them SEO (search engine optimisation) driven and rightly so. SEO is important; the inclusion of key words is what helps Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc. find you. The right key words get you to the top of the list. But there is such a thing as overkill. And death by keyword does not make a pretty site.

For instance, recently I wrote a series of articles on designer-inspired furniture. The articles were short – 200 words each – and not much research was needed. But (and this is a big but), the assignment took much longer than it should have because the client had a very specific list of required key phrases for each article. Some of the phrases were simple enough to include but some of them were based upon search engine results, so weren't actually 'phrases' as much as 'words strung together'. Plus, the list of key phrases was so long that once you included every one of them as many times as requested, there wasn't much word count left to actually write something of value. But I faced the challenge with a smile; and the end result was a series of readable articles that made sense. But it wasn't easy.

The point is, "Yes Dorothy, there is a thing called too much SEO" and it makes for bad writing. And, while there are some of us who still work hard to create a quality product using an overkill of key phrases and 'words strung together', most of us aren't willing to invest that kind of time. The average writer's pay for a 250 word article is $3.00 USD. So, unless we can crank that baby out in less than 15 minutes, we're better off flipping burgers or scrubbing toilets.

Please remember, the next time you hire a writer to create SEO-driven articles that quality is as important as quantity of keywords; and just a few key words can actually go a long way. It isn't the one with the most key phrases that wins – Google and the others are paying attention to the whole package being presented, so quality is also important. Of course, I shouldn't even have to say that, should I…

How Good is Your Grammar?

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 09:59 PM PDT

The rage in Attraction Marketing seems to involve blogging or article writing. Most of what I see is written correctly with all the proper punctuation. A few of us need a little help now and then. Myself included in that mix. (Hmmm, is that a complete sentence?)

I stumbled upon this short test at http://www.howsyourgrammar.com

I liked English in high school. I think I have fairly good spelling and felt like I knew a few things about grammar, colons, possessive plurals and stuff like that. I remember loving to diagram sentences. Diagraming sentences is like putting a puzzle together.

I find myself second guessing myself when it comes to spelling and the proper usage of certain punctuations, possessive pronouns and the like. So I took the test. To be honest, I found it a bit difficult to figure out the mistake in each sentence given! I scored a measly 60%. OUCH!

I hear you chuckling! Go ahead. If you think you can spare 15 minutes, take the test yourself and let me know your score. I challenge you.

By the way, how’s my grammar? :)

The Karate Kids

"Ichi, ni, san," a young student counted off – the class officially began. I took my seat in the back of the dojo and the four young students, dressed in black gis, lined up while one girl lead them in Dojo kun. Midway through a newcomer in a white uniform shuffled her way into class.

When the class began lunges, they each had heavy joints. Their back knee made contact with the floor like a Kung Fu master's punch in his opponent's gut. Upon picking up their jump ropes, however, the students had different strategies for getting it over their head and under their feet. Some did it backwards, while others stumbled. An orange belt, who had excelled in the resistance portion of the workout, found his jump rope often balancing on his head.

Thinking Articles Are Not Right for You

Posted: 31 May 2010 03:19 PM PDT

People tend to think article writing is a waste of time, but there are many advantages to this process. The most obvious advantage to article writing is that it is free and highly effective in marketing your website using back-links.

A back-link is considered an incoming link to a web page. They are significant in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of back-links your website has determines how important your web page is.

Search engines often use the number of back-links that a website has to determine its ranking. As an example, Google has a system called PageRank where if a search engine had to decide what order to post a persons’ search results, it will use the number of back-links associated with that page to decide the order. On top of the quantity, the quality of the back-link is also important. Back-links from authoritative sites are considered highly valuable. Articles submitted to Ezine publishers are such sites.

Studies show that when people do a search for a particular topic, whether the search topic was on nutrition, home business, making money, used cars, or article writing, if your website isn't in the top 10, people will not find your website. Getting onto the first page or even the top 10 should be your goal and article submissions help do this.

It takes time to write an article and if you don't have writing skills, it will become more frustrating. Because there are so many benefits to article writing, if you are one of these types of people, you should consider hiring a ghost writer. It is important to select the right ghost article that parallels your niche. Some will charge outrages prices, while others can be below $10 per article. Thos who charge low fees sometimes do not produces a quality product so keep this in mind. Ask to read some of their work to see if it fits your liking.

It also takes time to submit your articles to all the different ezine publishers. An ezine publisher is nothing more than a specialized term applied to small magazines and newsletters distributed in an electronic environment. It can also be called hyperzine or cyberzine, but ezine is the most popular name. Many large print services will use ezine publications for article sourcing for the news paper or larger magazines. You will find that you only need to have a few ezine publishers at hand to start making a difference.

Search Engines and Articles

Posted: 30 May 2010 11:39 PM PDT

When you are looking at writing an article for your blog or website there are a number of concerns that you will want to take into account. You have to look at writing your article as if you were writing it for someone that is suffering from attention deficit disorder whether they are or not such is the world of the Internet. There are so many people out there on the web that just don't have the patience to read from a screen and wasting money on printing everything to make reading it all easier is just too expensive to do.

So with this in mind you need to keep your articles to fewer than 500 words and ideally, you want to reach for the 200-300 range. In addition, believe it or not, the title you choose is the place you want to spend the most time on in relation to its actual word count as the title needs to be catchy enough to entice the reader to well, read your article. You also want to keep your articles as unique and standalone as possible because you will get dinged from the search engines for just duplicating your content to falsely increase the number of your articles in order to get a higher rating.

Spelling and grammar obviously goes hand in hand, but there are exceptions and I have gone into more detail on this with in another of my articles on this blog. Keep in mind that using relevant keywords and phrases is necessary to enhance your search engine visibility. One other aspect of that is to remember that search engines are relatively simple things and where they do read your site they do not interpret what it is your saying, well that is not entirely true they do interpret but not this way.

What I mean by that is where a human might know you are talking about a search engine might not. E.g., "You will want to use that car jack carefully and that is because that tool can be dangerous if not used properly". Instead, you should write it this way "You will want to use that car jack carefully as car jacks can be dangerous if not used properly". See the difference I mean? When I used the word "tool" a human would know what that tool was but as a search engine uses keyword density too in gathering results so it would just skip that and it will alter your standings especially if you do that sort of thing all the time.

Writing that way gives you keyword density just keep in mind not to over do it as that can have the opposite effect that you were going for.

To all the newbies out there trying to climb the ladder, DO NOT whatever you do quit or you may miss your own success and have a great day!

A Great Idea For a Blogging Web Site is No Longer Enough

Posted: 30 May 2010 11:05 PM PDT

Because there are so many blogs and web sites about blogs on the internet, it can be tough to distinguish your blogging web site from all of the others. Whether you are starting up a new web site aimed at bloggers or whether you are looking to make your existing blogging site more distinctive, the key to building and maintaining a site that will capture the interest and attention of the blogging community is finding your niche. If you can fill a unique need in a way that no other web site does, you’ll be able to build a lasting readership among web surfers. Every great blogging web site starts with a great idea, and you can’t build a successful site that will last without one. There are many great sites aimed at today’s bloggers, and competition for the attention of this growing demographic is fierce. To make your blogging web site stand out from the pack, you will need to offer something that no other site is currently offering, or you will need to do the same thing that an already popular site does but in a more impressive or valuable way.

One way to discover an ideal model for your blogging web site is to look at the sites that have successfully captured a blogging audience already to determine if you can appropriate some of their strategies to help realize your vision. Many people agree that the web sites that do the best in today’s market are the sites that have the most personality. The fiercely individual surfers who are bloggers are a demographic that responds especially strongly to personality, so consider how you can give your site a unique and attractive feeling by lending your own voice and sensibility to your site’s design and content.

Once you have a great idea for your site, have pinpointed a special niche that you are well equipped to fill, and have infused the site with personality, the next step is figuring out how to get the word out to bloggers. In the long run, a great idea just isn’t enough to propel your blogging web site to success. You will need to draft a smart and realistic marketing plan in order to draw readers to your site.

Blogging for Profit Begins With a Long Term Plan

Posted: 30 May 2010 02:11 AM PDT

Many people dream of blogging for profit, and this goal is not far beyond the reach of someone with average intelligence, a willingness to work hard, and a basic grasp of blogging technology. However, very few people manage to reap the profits they want from their blog. Most people who attempt to make money with their blogs do not succeed for two reasons. Often, bloggers have unrealistic expectations of how fast their readership will grow and how much money they will make, and when these expectations are not met the disappointment can crush the desire to continue blogging. The other trap that many bloggers fall into has to do with lack of planning.

If you want to turn a profit as a blogger, the key to success is to make a realistic plan and stick with it.

To succeed at blogging for profit, the main thing that you will need is a large readership. The higher your traffic, the more advertisers will agree to pay you. However, cultivating the regular visitors that you will need in order to make a profit isnt easy. You need to be able to market your blog effectively.

Too many bloggers spend all of their time writing posts and almost no time marketing their project. To be certain, updating as often as you can is a great way to keep your blog high on blogrolls and high in blog search engines like technorati, and once your readers know that you update frequently they will return to your site on a regular basis. However, it does not matter how often you update if nobody is reading your page, so don't skimp on the time that you spend drawing visitors to your site. To make your dreams of blogging for profit a reality, try decreasing your number of posts and using some of that time to draw new visitors by setting up link exchanges with other bloggers, making contacts in the blog community, and following other established modes of winning traffic.

Of course, even if you are a marketing genius or have a really great idea for a blog, success is not going to happen overnight. Try to stay committed to your blogging project during this initial rough period. To stay motivated, set goals for how often you will update and how many readers you want to attract, and then reward yourself for sticking with your plan.

Best Ways to Write Articles that Make You Money

Many people think about the idea of being paid to write for a living. The Internet has made publishing seem much easier than ever before. This isn’t quite the case. Self publishing is easier than it has ever been. However, it’s a little more challenging to get paid for writing.

Yet, writing is still one of the first avenues people consider when they think of making money online. Article writing can be a great way to make money online. It seems simple enough: find a client who will pay you to write their articles. Of course, like all businesses, nothing is as easy as it first appears. So if you’re still willing to get started as an article writer, here are a few tips to help you.

You must have some basic skills in terms of spelling and punctuation. You need to understand the basic rules of grammar. Think back to some articles you have looked over lately. It isn’t difficult to tell a good writer from a bad writer. If you hone your writing skills you will appear more professional and you will also be able to command a higher wage. The truth is that no one will pay anything for an article that is full of grammatical and spelling errors. Take the time to learn how to spot your mistakes. Your profit margin will thank you for it.

Piece together a portfolio of completed work for clients to see. It’s also fine to offer your clients a downloadable PDF file of your samples. You should also have a folder of them on your hard drive so that you can easily e-mail them to any client who asks to see samples of your work. Highlight your specific writing skills within your portfolio. Try to include the specific styles of writing that you’re happy to do for clients.

If you create an outline for an article before writing it, the writing of it will be simpler. Having an outline makes it easier to write the actual article. This takes away uncertainty about how to begin the article or where it is going. The outline gives you the basic structure of the article, so all you have to do is fill in the details that your research has provided. When you have an outline you are also less likely to lose track of your main point. You don’t want an article filled with tangents or fluff do you?

Many people find it rewarding and enjoyable to earn money by writing articles. Don’t think, however, that it’s something that requires no time or effort. The next time you read an article online, remember that someone put quite a bit of effort into creating it. If an article looks like it was effortless to write, you can attribute that to the ability of the writer, who made it look easy. Good articles take more work to produce than it may appear at first glance. There is a growing demand for quality article writers, which is itself proof that it’s not an easy task!

The reader will just quickly disregard the paragraph and move on to much easier reading articles that are good to look at as well as read. 2) Make use of numbers or bullets. As each point is stressed out, numbers and bullets can quickly make the point easy to remember and digest. As each point, tip, guide or method is started with a bullet or point, readers will know that this is where the tips start and getting stressed. Format you bullets and numbers with indentations so that your4 article won't look like a single block of square paragraphs. Add a little bit of flair and pizzazz to your articles shape.

Use statements and questions that utilize keywords that people are looking for. Provide titles or headers that describe your articles content but should also be short and concise.
Use titles like, "Tips on making her want you more", or "How to make her swoon and blush" .You could also use titles that can command people, for example, "Make her yours in six easy Ways". These types of titles reach out to a persons' emotions and makes them interested.

Driving your examples with graphic metaphors and similes would make it easy for them to imagine what you are talking about. Making the experience pleasurable and enjoyable for them.
6) Utilize figures when necessary and not just ordinary and insipid statements. Using specific facts and figures can heighten your article because it makes it authoritative. But do not make it too formal, it should be light and easy in them and flow. Like a friendly teac her having a little chat with an eager student.

The easiest Way to Create Articles – Public Domain!

Posted: 29 May 2010 01:48 PM PDT

There are many webmasters that find writing articles for their site to be a very tedious task. Many people dread writing articles because they find researching for the topic and writing down original materials will be too taxing on them.

You need to have your creative juices flowing and simply downloading an article would be plagiarism or tantamount to stealing, not exactly. Have you ever heard about public domain? These are articles written down by many authors that have declared their works to be public domain, which means anybody can use it for whatever purpose they want.
While most authors would prefer to copyright their work for their rights, there are also a number who doesn't mind sharing their work. Public domain articles are not owned by anybody and can be used and abused by anyone. You can use public domain articles in helping you write your articles. With the public domain articles you can simply edit them to your own style and rewrite them as you please to make it suitable for your needs. All the ideas are there already and its just a matter of finding the write article with the topic or subject you need.
You don't need to scour around the library or the internet for hours for information and start an article from scratch. For webmasters who are looking for articles to fill their site and to generate a high ranking for their website in search engine results, they can just modify the article by infusing keywords and keyword phrases related to their site.
A webmaster or website operator do not risk any chance of getting sued for copyright infringement because they are public domain, once again meaning that anybody can use it. Writing articles by using public domain wont require as much work as writing one from scratch would. One good factor in using public domain articles for your site or for any project is that you save a lot of money. You dismiss the need to hire experienced and seasoned writers that some website operators use to write their articles. While a single five hundred worded article would only set you down 10 to 15 dollars, this cost will drastically increase when you need hundreds of articles to fill the needs of your site.
For those who needs articles to generate newsletters or an e-zine, public domain articles will be very beneficial. You do not need to count on your contributors or pay writers to write down articles for your newsletter or e-zine. You can fill all the pages without any cost or the worry of being sued and sought after by the writers. You can simply copy the articles and place them on your newsletter and e-zine.
Public domain articles are a virtual untapped resource that many people fail to realize the true value. The power of articles, keywords and keyword phrases have been deemed invaluable these past few years for many internet based businesses and sites that want to rank high in search engine results.
The number of article and content writers have grown significantly due to the rise in the demand for articles. As newer and newer topics and subjects have arisen, there are many demands for new articles to be written. An industry has been formed and this is a worldwide demand.
Public domain articles have given a great alternative for those who are cash strapped as well as do not have the time nor the skills to do their articles for themselves.
Searching for public domain articles is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3. You can search for them in search engines and do searches in many directories for the topic or subject that you need. Read them and simpy copy paste them to a word processing program and simply edit them to suit your needs.

The sad fact is my friends is that it takes a heck of a lot of work to cover all the bases. I mean well, Jezus I could write a whole site, and there is by the way, just on buying a domain name.

So my changing goal, and by the way if you want to do it yourself online you better get used to this one which is get used to and embrace damn change, is to now do this with the least amount of effort possible. 'cause let's face it we are all deep down geared to the path of least resistance and minimal effort for the highest result or we wouldn't have invented computers in the first place. So, as long as you're all with me on this, and yes I realize this blog's social consciousness is basically crickets chirping at the moment.

So the ones that are at least getting some laughs watching me squirm at the moment as I try to climb the ladder. Errr where was I, oh yes, as long as you are all with me on this I will attempt the Everest of having a site with the least amount of guff (bells and whistles) on the subject. Anyway, enough rambling for now. Raise a glass and wish me luck because well damn, I need it.

Writing Articles The Easy Way

White Papers - A Special Kind of Terror

Posted: 19 May 2010 07:26 PM PDT

Oh my. White papers. In my day-to-day blogging life, I get a lot of mileage out of humor, sarcasm, cluelessness, and being a dope in general. But a white paper is the one instance where you simply can’t joke around. You are expected to make a point, to explain, to elucidate, to persuade, to basically NOT be a dork. In other words, my safety net is gone.

For those who care to be illuminated on the topic, what are the necessary components of a white paper? Well, I pulled this from somewhere, and I can’t recall where. My regular readers know that I am always diligent about citing my sources. This time, I just can’t remember where I got this.

Anyway, a good white paper should do the following:

  • Begin with a well developed overview/executive summary/abstract: Attention grabbing, one-paragraph summary of problem, solution and hint of results.
  • State the Problem: Two-to-three paragraphs demonstrating your knowledge of your clients’ challenges and industry trends. Identify the main objectives of the paper.
  • Describe your product: Incorporate design decisions; industry standards, testing and reliability; best practices and ease of use.
  • Address how your product resolves the problem; tie the two together
Demonstrate with evidence. Illustrate with case studies and expert testimonials. Entice with: benefits and returns on investment (ROI) , future applications, developments, and timelines.
  • Conclude: with confidence and credibility
Refer to the abstract and summarize your main advantages

So, that’s the setup. The topic at hand is E-commerce, and why a small business owner should take the plunge into online retail. It’s a four part thing that included several interviews, tons of research and a bunch of anxiety about whether I sounded like I knew what I was talking about. I suppose I will let you be the judge. Of the four parts, the first two are online. Enjoy! Or, rather, endure!

How do you tell if an article is well written?

Posted: 16 May 2010 02:21 PM PDT

Whether a piece of work is good or otherwise is basically a very subjective issue. Apart from ensuring that the sentence structure makes sense and that there are no grammatical and spelling mistakes, what else should you look for ? Below are 3 tips to help you when you are checking for the quality of the content.

1. Does the article focus on the readers?
Your purpose is to gain trust and interest from your readers so you have to ensure that the content in the article is relevant to what your website is all about. It is vital that the content is about interesting stuff that will appeal to your visitors. Check to see if the article is written around the target keywords as that is what your readers were looking for in the first place.

2. Is the article fully optimized?
The internet world is a very competitive one so you have to ensure that your site appears on the first page of Google if you want to make any money. Apart from providing quality content , you should also ensure that all your articles are optimized. You can achieve that by including target keywords in your articles (between 1% to 3% density is best but definitely not more than 5%). It will also be beneficial if the article includes LSI.

3. Does the article reflect the writer’s passion on the subject?
Readers are very smart people, they will know if you are passionate about the subject or are just writing for the sake of making money. When you love and have a deep understanding of a particular subject, your passion for it will flow through your writing in your articles. Therefore, you either learn to love the subject and carry out more research on it or outsource your writing to someone else ! Do not run the risk of chasing your visitors away!

Contrary to what many people may say, article marketing is definitely not dead and if you want to get some decent traffic to your site, especially when it is new, you have to write and submit some articles to article directories. However, in addition to the above three tips, one other point you need to take note of is that you have to submit unique articles to more reputable article directories such as EzineArticles. To some newbies, writing might not come as naturally to you as it did for me, in that case you can either outsource to a reputable and dependable writer or learn to love writing! As long as you want to use article marketing to boost your sales, you cannot escape from getting some high quality content done.

How to write your draft 1, 2 and 3

Posted: 16 May 2010 11:43 AM PDT

I'm sure most of us have heard that in order to improve the quality of our writing we need to do three things: write, write and rewrite, but what does that really mean? Should we rewrite the article from scratch each time? What exactly would that achieve?

We'll you will be pleased to hear that, no, you don't have to rewrite the whole article from scratch each time, but instead of saying write, write and rewrite we should be saying 'remember your drafts 1,2&3'.

But why three drafts? Why not just 2 or even better, just 1? It would be a lot easier and quicker to just write a single draft and get the process over with. Unfortunately, if you want to produce a high quality article, all three drafts are necessary. There is a lot to be done before an article can be submitted to a journal and like with anything in life the task becomes easier if you break it up into stages.

Once you have the core idea and you've conducted your research and created the framework for your article, you can begin the first stage which would be writing draft 1. When writing the first draft you should be focusing on getting your ideas onto the paper. Let your imagination free, but be sure to touch on the points you need to for your argument to make sense. Don't edit yourself and do not stop to correct your spelling, this will detract your focus from the point you are trying to make and will lead to weak arguments.

When working on your second draft you can expand on the ideas you started in draft 1, or delete repetition or unnecessary paragraphs. Remember not to get sentimental about the writing, a paragraph may be beautifully written but if it does not add to the value of the article then you need to scrap it. Focus on the content of the article and only the content at this stage.

When doing draft 3 you make your final corrections. Ensure that the argument makes sense and that everything that should be referenced is indeed referenced. Now is the time to take a look at your spelling and punctuation. Make sure each sentence makes sense and that the article follows a logical order.

The final step, which forms part of the third draft, is assembling your reference list. If you already have one check it against the in text references to be sure that you've referenced the sources you have used.
