| Posted: 23 Oct 2010 10:25 AM PDT Life working as a contractor for Demand Media Studios is… interesting. And much more difficult than I’d hoped it would be. When you can find titles that you enjoy writing about or titles that can be easily researched, it’s as much fun as I’d hoped becoming a freelance writer could be. Lately, though, it’s starting to feel like a job. Ugh. Lately, there is an overabundance of computer tech and automobile titles in the topic list. Ugh. The main issue is not having access to the types of material I’d like to write about. Demand Media provides content for several different sites, and probably one of the most well-known is eHow.com, which I provide content for. But they also have other sites like LiveStrong that offer topics on parenting, relationships, and other such titles that I would much rather write about. Unfortunately, the problem is that writers for some of Demand’s other properties have to either be credentialed or have stellar grammar/research scores, which can be difficult to maintain, given that the rating criteria is inconsistent among the team of editors. Writers are chosen for special projects mostly based on these scores. Any writer who works with Demand can attest to the difficulty in maintaining the scores needed for these titles. It’s unfortunate to find that whether you are in the 9-5 world or not, life experience counts for so little if you don’t have a degree of some sort. Why do we discount and devalue those who have gained a lifetime’s worth of knowledge simply because they chose not to conform? Overall, I still enjoy working with Demand Media. Hope it gets better soon. My latest batch of published work can be found here: : http://tinyurl.com/299hdng |
| Posted: 23 Oct 2010 05:30 AM PDT It is Saturday and I have had a long week of content writing and article creating for my clients and doing some link building aswell. It has all gone pretty well and I have not come up against anything that would get me to stumped. I also have been completing the Beginners Guide on Seomoz which is slowly going down chapter by chapter. My knowledge I feel is pretty good and it is slowly improving each day with the more articles I read, the more videos I watch and the more blogging and linking I do. I analysed my keywords yesterday so now I now where I stand on the 22nd of each month from this point onwards i.e. am I moving up or down in the Google rankings. I will begin to start creating 5 articles per week and linkbuilding on one of my keywords and then alternate each week from then on. I will begin this on the first week of November and then that should allow me to really focus on each word in both articles, content writing and linkbuilding. To be honest I am nervous because this is a lot of time that is going into this project and I want to see the results asap – I guess this is what makes seo hard because you have to wait and have faith in what you are doing. I think I have learned a good amount of information and I would like to think that I can compete with these keywords that I have set myself. Once I nail these down then I think my confidence and skill level will be better to go after a more competitive keyword such as search engine marketing or online marketing. I intend to finish my beginner’s guide this week and then start consuming some of the articles that I have been bookmarking on various topics that I think are good. I have been doing real good on keeping this blog up to date and interestingly when I was searching my keywords my blog was ranking higher than my own website – which I guess is a good thing as my website becomes more noticed and relevant. I learnt my first bit of proper html yesterday which I know is a bit sad considering I used to have a web design business but as we know I used software to generate that. It has made me think that I might do a few online guides to html and study the basics and then perhaps the more advanced stuff. I think it will only do me good to know this sort of thing if I continue down this road. Squidoo is one hell of a unique site but I really like it. It cheesy in some respects but cool cheesy which I really like. Makes submitting stuff a bit more fun believe it or not. I wrote a 3000 word article on How To Optimise A New Website which was pretty cool to do and I got a nice backlink of it as well. I think I will do another 3 good-sized articles on there and get a solid backlink off all of them regarding my 4 keywords. Anyway I am going to try to take it easy in terms of work this weekend and chill out and maybe avoid any seo research, so that I am fresh come Monday morning. I will try to blog again tomorrow to keep the site updated and then I might do 1 more chapter on my Beginners Seo Guide and chill out. |

You probably noticed that ever since I started writing the Wrap again (after my summer vacation at the nice place where the people wear white uniforms and speak very calmly) that we’ve used a different “wrap” photo each week. You know, bubble wrap, cling wrap, chicken fajita wrap… Hilarity. You probably also guessed that, sooner or later, we’d run out of wrap references, and then naturally skip over into “rap” references. This, of course, has been a carefully crafted, under-the-radar campaign to post a picture of Flava Flav for no good reason. So, here you have it. This is what innovation looks like. Let’s now look at what happened this week on Copyblogger: Monday:Five Ways to Write Magnificent Copy As you may have guessed from the title, this post contains five ways to make your average copy a whole lot better, but I got stuck implementing tip #1: “Write drunk; edit sober.” I mean it’s good advice but WOW it’s loud in here and I’m going to contact all of my high school girlfriends through Facebook and that’ll show them who’s boss! and NO I WON’T SIT DOWN and also I’ll text my old boss, that jerk… What time is it, anyway? I love you, man. Tuesday:How to Publish Your Book in the iBookstore So I can have a book published without getting a book published if I can do it in iBook electronic format for the Apple iPad. That’s pretty cool, and this post is all nuts and bolts on how exactly to make that happen. But the bigger question is, can I get a jetpack? We were supposed to have those things decades ago. Wednesday:Does Sex Matter When Scoring Online? This post isn’t about sex in the way you’re probably thinking, but rather about gender and whether men or women have an advantage when trying to make it as a blogger. It’s an interesting question with a solid, agreeable, sexy answer. My verdict? You can have sex with whomever you want as long as you’re consenting adults. It’s a free country. And then sure, why not do some blogging after? Thursday:Should Your Content Aim for Traffic or Conversion? You can tell it’s post-Vegas week around here. We’ve already had posts on drinking and sex, and this one contains some saucy Cosmo magazine sexual references in the quest to determine whether it’s more advantageous to seek traffic or better conversion of the traffic you already have. So check it out; both have their advantages. (NOW: Ten bucks says Friday’s post will be about shooting guns.) Friday:7 Ways Being More Confident Will Make You More Money Not to get all Tony Robbins on you, but it’s true that if you’re more confident, you’re going to do better in a lot of stuff, and money is high on that list — right up there with improved swordsmanship. This post has a bunch of ways in which you’ll end up with more money if you can become more self-assured, but none of them involve tall, smooth-talking men with giant teeth. This week’s cool links:
