The Most Important Element of Your Marketing Story

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 06:30 AM PST

image of actor Charlie Chaplin

Robert wrote yesterday about David Mamet's advice on dramatic tension, the key element that drives every compelling story.

But there's another element that's critical to story, and it's particularly important when you're telling a story that intends to persuade.

Whether you want to make a sale, gain an email subscription, or motivate a change in behavior, your dramatic story will fail if it doesn't have one thing:

A relatable protagonist.

In other words, your story needs to be about someone we care about.

Sometimes that can be easier said than done. So here's how to put together a memorable protagonist who will pull your readers into your story — and more important, will persuade them to take the action you're looking for.

The protagonist is the actor in your story

I'm sure you remember this from Freshman English class, but the protagonist is just the main actor of the story. We used to say "hero," but protagonists aren't always what we would call heroic.

In fact, the archetypal story described by scholars like Joseph Campbell starts out as a very ordinary person, living in an ordinary world. It's the circumstances of his life that pull him into a "hero's journey" to extraordinary places and incredible events.

The protagonist might be you

A lot of marketers base their stories on themselves.

You show where you've come from, where you started, the difficulties you faced and how you overcame them.

Then you tie that back to what you're selling. Because you've taken this hero's journey yourself, you know how to defeat the dragons and storm the castle.

Your own experiences make you a dragon-slaying authority. And you can use that authority to persuade your audience to buy or adopt the solutions you recommend.

The protagonist might be your past customer

Not everyone wants to be the star of his own marketing story.

You don't have to make your stories all about you. It's often more effective to tell a compelling story about the people you help.

Case studies and testimonials are just good stories about how your product or service solved thorny problems for your customers.

Like any good other story, testimonials and case studies need dramatic tension. Going back to Mamet, there needs to be a gap between what your protagonist wanted and what he attained. His attempt to close that gap is what makes the story interesting.

That means you've got to show a "before" (customer facing a tough problem) and an "after" (how you solved that problem for them).

The protagonist is always your buyer

Coming full circle, the reader always needs to put herself in the shoes of your protagonist.

That's what fiction writers mean by a "relatable" character.

It isn't always about being likeable. Not every great character is likeable. But we won't be pulled into a story unless we can relate to the character, which means he has the emotions we imagine we would have in the same situation.

Your potential buyer is the real star of every marketing story. If she reads the story and thinks, "I can see myself doing that," you've won.

Social proof without numbers

A lot of content marketers want to know how they can use social proof before their blogs get big.

Storytelling is one great answer.

We're a "monkey see, monkey do" species. Many forms of human behavior are contagious. We can certainly be prone to mimic ugly behavior, but we also mimic admirable behavior like generosity and courage.

We unconsciously imitate the stories we see around us, both real and fictional.

So show the behavior you want your reader to "catch." Sell a product or service by showing how it benefits people, and telling stories about those people.

With a relatable protagonist and a good sense of drama, you'll be able to craft a marketing story that pulls readers in, keeps them coming back, and makes it easy for them to see themselves as your happy customers.

Why Keyword Selection Tools and Competitor Analysis Are Essential in Local Maryland SEO

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 01:48 AM PST

Keyword Research for Local Maryland SEO

Keyword research is the starting point for local Maryland SEO, especially for small or local businesses. Even if the small business owner believes that he or she knows the best keyword phrases that people use to find their business, these assumptions can lead them down a less successful path in their internet marketing efforts.Instead of making assumptions, local Maryland SEO should begin with strategic keyword research based on statistical facts.

As with traditional keyword research, the local Maryland SEO keyword research process should begin with a list of the keyword combinations that the business owner suspects are going to bring in leads. For instance, the name of the business, the nearby cities, states, counties, zip codes, and the products or services offered should be tested in various combinations and added to a spread sheet. The goal of this part of the research is to brainstorm all the various terms people could use to search for the business. You should also look for any synonyms and colloquial phrases that people might use for your products and services.

Once you have your list of phrases, you can begin to check their search volume and competition. Local Maryland SEO keyword research can be difficult because local phrases have relatively low search volume, and many keyword research services don't have the data, and will report back "insufficient search volume".

Local keyword research is important is because using the most searched phrases the business can focus local SEO to get better qualified leads. There are some tools, which can help, in local Maryland SEO keyword research. For instance, Google Insights, Google Adwords Keyword tool and Google trends are free tools that show search traffic and usually have information on local phrases. Other keyword research tools like Trellian's Keyword Discovery have so little data that they tend to skew the results because their data comes from smaller search engines and ISPs, so it is just a subset of the entire internet.

Now that Google has started to show local results for broader keyword phrases, by using the searcher's IP addresses to discern their location, it is becoming less necessary to add the city name in your optimization. Searchers will likely stop typing in the city name during their searches, and we will be back to making assumptions about local phrases. However Google Insights does show the search volume for the phrase by country, states, and major city.

Once you have completed local Maryland SEO keyword research, you still need to decide if these phrases are worthwhile to optimize for. You can do this by looking at how competitive these phrases are. There are two steps to competitive research. First determine how many pages are already optimized and indexed for the phrase, and then check to see whether there is at least one poorly optimized website ranking for the phrase on the first page of Google.

Looking for a poorly optimized site can be done quickly by putting the search term in and using a tool to check each site on the first page of Google for incoming links (look for any less than 100), google page rank (look for any less than 3), has the keyword in the title and description META tags (look for any that do not), etc.Indicate each phrase with a weak site indexed.

On the same spread sheet you used for your keywords you can add the following fields: Google broad match (search for the phrase in quotes and record the number of results), Intitle (search intitle:"keyword"), Inanchor (search inanchor:"keyword"), intitle & inanchor (search intitle:"keyword" and incancor:"keyword" to show sites with optimized titles and incoming links anchor text), and #1 site for the term.

After you finish the spreadsheet you can sort it to show you the best results that will give you the most searchers with the least competition. You can also search to see who your main competition really is, and see if you can rank quickly above the site that is poorly optimized for that phrase.

How to Captivate Your Audience with Story (From America’s Greatest Living Playwright)

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 06:30 AM PST

image of typewriter

There's been a fevered interest in the art of storytelling among the marketing crowd recently.

The masters and the hacks alike are thumping from every available pulpit that storytelling is the most powerful device on earth in regard to human influence.

We are told that story — applied to salesmanship, preaching, advertising, conversation, marketing, songwriting, and blogging — contains the power to deliver the entire world to the deft storyteller's door.

This is correct.

The writer runs this show.

But what is a well-told story? How do we know we're getting down to the true thing?

Libraries are filled with books on craft. You can (and should) read everything from Aristotle to McKee to get your chops. Today, let's get into a simple note or two from the pen of a contemporary legend.

David Mamet, America's greatest living playwright, has forgotten more about all this than ten internet marketing gurus sipping mojitos in San Jose will ever know.

A few months ago, a memo surfaced, written by Mamet to the clan of writers working on his television show. This little “memo,” as Movieline states, is actually more a master class in writing and storytelling.

Let’s let Mamet take us to school …

Information is … information

The audience will not tune in to watch information. You wouldn't, I wouldn't. No one would or will. The audience will only tune in and stay tuned in to watch drama. ~ David Mamet

50,000 people were waiting. Untold thousands would watch online in the hours and days ahead.

He walked onto the dark stage in faded jeans and running shoes at 10 am sharp. In his right hand was a simple clicker that moved the images behind him as he spoke.

For two hours, the audience laughed, roared and gasped as the unassuming everyman showed them exactly what they wanted. And then gave it to them, in spades.

Steve Jobs runs one of the greatest theater companies on earth.

What is drama?

Drama, again, is the quest of the hero to overcome those things which prevent him from achieving a specific, acute goal. ~ David Mamet

He landed in this country a small child with nothing but his family. He grew up oppressively poor, but found early on that he had a taste for hard work and persuasion.

He was going to make it in this new world. No matter what.

With a Big Wheel and a fistful of pocket change, he worked to find in-demand products to sell to his buddies in the neighborhood. The kid from Belarus was on the move …

A chain of lemonade stands.

A baseball card empire.

Earning four-figures a week before turning teen.

Then it came to an end. His father demanded he show up every day at the family liquor store to carry out the most menial tasks in the place. Day after day, week after week, he slogged it out for a fraction of what he’d been making on his own.

A few years later, flipping through a wine magazine, he made a connection between the guys who’d bought his baseball cards and his father’s customers that collected wine.

From packing boxes in the basement, to shipping wine out the door, he grew the family business from $4 million to $60 million in less than ten years.

Gary Vaynerchuk was only getting started.

Who cares about drama? I'm in business

If the scene bores you when you read it, rest assured it will bore the actors, and will, then, bore the audience, and we’re all going to be back in the breadline. ~ David Mamet

Read Mamet’s first quote again, about what the audience will or will not tune in to watch (or read, or listen to).

The Information Age is coming to a close. It is crumbling around the ancient foundation of the human desperation for meaningful story, unadorned truth, and compelling drama that holds a mirror to life.

Information is simultaneously too much and not enough.

Information is impotent to reach the hearts and minds of those who can use your idea, product, or service.

If you think I’m swerving into hyperbole, check in with the infobesity epidemic.

Or the minimalist revival.

Or the rise of companies like John’s Phones.

Story is virile, rare, unforgettable. And when done well, more true than plain fact.

You, me, Mamet — we all eat or starve in direct proportion to how good (and truthful) a story we tell.

Every marketer a playwright.

Each prospect an audience.

Every retweet a ticket to your show.

Enter, stage left …
