My First Job at Elance

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 05:23 AM PST

My first job at Elance took approximately 20 connects to obtain. By the time I received the job I was about ready to give up. I had focused so much time and effort into searching for work that I felt like I was not cut out for freelancing. My profile was mediocre, and I continue to work on it as time goes by. I figured I would start with article writing. I am a great writer and I saw that there were plenty of opportunities to write articles for SEO.

I burned the job board up bidding on these types of jobs. I had heard the first job was the hardest to land. This is 100% TRUE. But it has been downhill since.

It does not matter what you specialize in, work is always a learning experience. College taught me a lot about different types of writing. When I applied what I had learned to the Elance skills tests, I succeeded in becoming a worthy provider. The good thing about a degree in communications is you learn to be versatile. I write business, research, white papers, proposals, and many types of presentations. I can surely thank my education for these skills. I scored high in quite a few Elance skills tests, and I would recommend that newer providers take these tests to secure a clients trust in your capabilities.

Always remember that you must keep pushing forward to become successful. Do not be intimidated by others who have completed hundreds of jobs, remember this is just a number and does not always reflect quality. I joined Elance under the name HonestWorks in 2009, but did not start marketing my skills until much later. Now that I have completed school my plan is to market the name HonestWorks to gain more clients. I invite anyone thinking about becoming a freelancer to do the same.

What Is Bum Marketing: How To Make Money With A $5 Budget

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 07:06 PM PST

Bum marketing is so called because even a bum can make money using this method. You need no outlay and can start with nothing. Absolutely zilch!

I had absolutely zilch because I had maxed out 7 credit cards. I used to laugh when I read about others doing that with just two, but I did it myself – in spades! My only word to you would be very careful how you use PPC programs like Adwords because I wasn't. But that's another story.

I discovered bum marketing because if there is one thing I am good at, it is writing. Bum marketing involves finding a profitable niche, or one that could be profitable. It has to be something with a reasonable large following, and a reasonable number of topics attached to it. Like fly fishing or quilting, or something similar. Something that is followed by people you would expect to have money. You don't want people flinching at paying $97 for a product related to their hobby or interest.

You then have to find some decent keywords. For bum marketing it doesn't matter too much if there is competition for them, but not too general. Not 'quilting' but perhaps 'hand quilting machines' or 'deep throat quilters'. Then get a website set up. You can get a cheap functional site for under $5 a month and then set up a website. A sales page for a product and a few pages with some content. If you can get it, register a domain name that is the same as, or relates to, one of the keywords you have chosen.

Write a few articles on the topic of your website, and use one for each of the web pages. Bum marketing is all about article writing. You should have one web page for each keyword you are using relating to your website. Find a few products to sell. If you have your own then great, but if not sell affiliate products.

Then write a few more articles and submit them to article directories. Each directory will allow you what is known as an 'Author's Resource Box' in which you can say a little about yourself and provide a URL for people to click on for more information. The URL should lead to a page that relates to the topic of the article, and should ideally be a text link with the keyword or phrase that is the title of your web page. The text link should be hyperlinked to the page; what is termed an 'active' link'.

If the directory does not specifically provide a Resource Box, you can add that information after your article. It has to be included and will go with your article whenever it is copied and used. The article will not only bring you traffic, but also valuable links back to your web pages.

It is important that you continue to write and keep pumping out new articles. I like to write two every week and send them off to the top 25 directories. That's all I have to do because most of the top 25 provide material to other directories, and before you know it your articles are all over the internet. That's bum marketing.

As I said, even a bum with no money can do it. I know, because I was that bum at one time. I am no longer!

Hyphens and Compound Adjectives

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:28 PM PST

"Old, oak tree" OR "Old oak tree"?

Take a noun, any noun, and stick two adjectives in front of it. Do you need to connect them with a hyphen? Or can you simply leave them alone?

The answer is "depends." More accurately, it depends on what they're doing to the noun, and what they're doing to each other.

The Formula for Hyphenating Two Adjectives

I love algebra. And I love grammar. In many ways, grammar is the algebra of language, and algebra is the grammar of math. We can use an algebraically expressed formula for determining whether or not to use a hyphen.

We use a hyphen when the following conditions are met:

(AdjectiveA + AdjectiveB) describes Noun
AND
AdjectiveA describes AdjectiveB

In words: We use a hyphen when two adjectives together describe a noun that follows, and when the first adjective describes the second.

Example One: oven-baked flavor

Let's put some real words in the formula, apply them in a sentence, and see how this works.

AdjectiveA: Oven
AdjectiveB: Baked
Noun: Flavor
Sentence: I love the oven-baked flavor of pretzels.

See that hyphen in oven-baked flavor? It needs to be there because our adjectives fit the formula above:

(Oven + Baked) describes Flavor
AND
Oven describes Baked

Thus, we need a hyphen.

The hard concept to grasp is how oven and baked together describe flavor. Together, they make one meaning, one descriptive term for flavor. We can understand that they describe flavor together when we try to use them individually. If we only use one, or if we put and in between them, we change the meaning of the sentence:

oven and baked flavor is different than oven-baked flavor
oven flavor and baked flavor are both different than oven-baked.

Now that we've dealt with the first part of the formula, let's look at the second part:
AdjectiveA describes AdjectiveB.

This is pretty simple, actually. What kind of baked are we talking about? The oven kind, not the old kind, the stale kind, the fire kind, or any other kind. Oven tells us what kind of baked.

We've satisfied the formula to determine that oven-baked flavor needs a hyphen.

Example Two: sky-blue car

Let's briefly look at a second example: a sky-blue car.

We have a car. What color is it? Not blue but sky-blue. Here, the terms sky and blue together describe car. Using either one alone would change the meaning. A sky-blue car is different than a blue car [different color] or a sky car [different technology]. A sky and blue car doesn't even make sense. Also, sky is describing the term blue, telling the reader what type of blue

When we use the formula above, we get this:

(Sky + Blue) describes Car
Sky describes Blue (tells what type of blue)

Example Three: old oak tree

Here's a case where you don't need a hyphen: "I sat under the old oak tree."

Here, old and oak both describe tree, but old does not describe oak—unless old oak is meant to be different than new oak. I suppose that could be possible in very specific cases, but probably not in common use. In this case, could we say "I sat under the tree that was old oak"? No? Then old is not describing oak

For comparison with the hyphenated examples above, we could reasonably say "I drove the car that was sky blue" and "I love pretzels that have a flavor of being oven baked."

Hey! Where'd the Hyphen Go?

When we move those two hyphens after the noun they are describing, we drop the hyphen, as in "The car was sky blue." The sentence structure now shows how they are connected to each other, so the hyphen isn't needed. Because the second adjective isn't before the noun, it doesn't give the interpretation that it can describe the noun by itself.

We also don't need a hyphen when the first descriptor is an adverb ending in –ly. Thus, the slowly trotting horse doesn't need a hyphen, even though it fits the formula above.

Does this really matter?

Is this important? Yes.

Of course, if your reader has fairly decent grammar and if you make a mistake with your punctuation, your reader may discredit you. But that's not the most important reason. This is: The meaning of the sentence can change depending on whether or not you have the hyphen.

A silver looking glass is different than a silver-looking glass. The first is a looking glass (mirror) made of silver. The second is a glass that has a silvery look (appearance).
