3 Quick Article Writing Tips Your Readers Will Like

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 07:50 AM PST

I’m posting articles but they’re not bringing traffic. Why? Don’t be afraid of writing articles, there’s just a few simple rules you should follow. We’ll share three secrets to better article writing with you here.

Online marketers who engage in article marketing are always looking for methods to improve their conversions. And of course we do know that you want the same thing, right? Writing articles for business and marketing purposes isn’t difficult, nor is it hard to learn how to do it well. Writing articles for publication on the web is a lot less stressful than the writing you did in high school and certainly college. Rest assured, the kind of writing you’ll be doing is much less demanding and easier to write because articles are relatively short and must not be taxing to the reader. One thing you do want to avoid is trying to impress your audience with your command of the English language. So what you want to do, for almost all markets, is to simply write the way you would normally talk to people. So get ready because here comes three solid article writing tips that you can start using right after you’re done reading this article.

Believe it or not, but one of the somewhat easiest methods to produce positive results with your articles is simply to read. Read articles written by other authors in your niche and even in other related niches, too. If you read and study enough articles then you will begin recognizing certain patterns, writing devices, and you’ll also get creative ideas from the styles in which they’re written. Study those articles and determine how the author conveys ideas and concepts. Notice how the sentence structuring is and if you can apply that to your own articles. A little can go a long way, and you can become a much better writer by simply emulating success writers, and your own articles will have a much higher chance of being read.

Always go back and read your articles aloud, and you will be able to tell if the flow isn’t good, etc. It is a good idea to read your article for different reasons such as typos, grammar, spelling, clarity, smoothness, etc. Ask yourself if your article is truly interesting, easy to read, and a good read. There are many articles on the Internet that are informative but don’t have the flow. If you accomplish those things, then your articles stand a better chance of leading to a conversion.

Always proof-read your writing, whether articles or not, and be willing to revise anything that you feel needs it. Failing to proof your articles is a set-up for publishing something that could prove embarrassing. All writers make mistakes when they’re trying to get things done, and if you let that go then people will get a different kind of impression from you. People will think it is unprofessional, and they’ll think about you, too. If possible, have another expert writer proof read your articles. Contstructive criticism is always an excellent learning tool for us.

Ask about your style of writing and see what they have to say about it. So, just proof read your articles any way you can because it’s better than nothing. Always keep writing because it’s the only way to get better, and always keep learning about article writing.

Writing Good Content To Attract Readers

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:14 PM PST

Some people focus on latent semantic indexing when building a new website, but I've just always found it is better if you focus on writing good content. All of those things happen naturally just by nature of writing good articles on topic.

Over a year ago I did a video on LSI that was used in StomperNet. It caused a furor on the web, it was absurd and silly. And then that was used in a launch, oh, he caused so much trouble he had to be sidelined. It was all fun of course. It was way too highbrow and advanced. We had very little engagement on that video. People just glazed over and hit pause and for good reasons too.

There's a bunch of technical issues about LSI about why it doesn't really work at scale for something like that, and not just computationally but about what the algorithm actually does. It's worked great in things like medicine and in law and things of that nature.

Good natural content is where it's really at. Now that's not like some SEOs will say, oh write good content for humans and Google will rank you where you belong. Yes, right on page seven.

The real deal is, it's a long tail attracter, it's about getting that traffic that you didn't even know you needed to go get. By the way, your ranking doesn't matter, it's the money you make that we use to score this game, and so write material that is actually going to entice the human to engage and do whatever conversion step you want them to do on your site. So that is the reason to generate unique content.

If you just write it for humans, well, sure enough, who is searching? Humans, they're probably searching with a similar language that you are. So that's exactly right, just write for humans.

Content is key. It seems funny coming from someone in SEO, which is that idea of writing to sell. It's not the search engines that are going to pull out their dollars and buy your products, it is going to be the user. So you want to write to them.

When we talk about building links and we talk about writing the article, articles I think are one of the best long standing ways to build links.

I think content is so good. You write content, you can adjust the article and use it in a syndication approach as well. There are other kinds of syndication that work as well, like press releases and things of that nature. They don't get syndicated as widely as articles that are submitted to the article directories, but those are good.

Then we start getting into the specifics of a business. This is where you can really put it in overdrive. Some of those will be SEO focused, and frankly some of them will not be. The way we score this game is money. SEO is great but it is not the only pony. If you have a Twitter application, well, Twitter. If you have a Facebook, application, Facebook. Do you get where this is going? Go where those people are.

Maybe you're in a niche marketplace, a very small niche, not just what we call niche in the internet marketing space, but one that is narrow. For example, products for pilots, particularly something like airline pilots only hang out in a relatively small number of places, in airports. Go where they are.

Affiliate marketing, that is another one. A lot of us in SEO have a deep connection to affiliate marketing because ultimately what we do is business opportunity. We talk a lot about information products. Ed Dale is one for example. Think about that and this is the great irony. Selling SEO software you don't do with SEO. You do with joint venture partners. I actually rank really poorly for most SEO stuff. It doesn't matter because it is the Who's Who of SEOs that are recommending this stuff and telling their clients about it and things like that, that's the deal.

The same kind of thing can happen in different markets. In terms of traffic strategies alone, there is social media. Social media trends is good. However, the ranking benefits are really not there except a secondary and tertiary thing. Nevertheless there is actually a secondary effect even from things like the social sites which end up creating links.

Rhetorically Speaking

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:50 PM PST

Day 9: Use the rhetorical action as the main verb.

A sentence may have several verbs. However, the verb in the "verb’s place" following the subject is generally the main verb upon which the rest of the sentence hangs. Consider this sentence:

"Julie thinks Tom is silly."

In this sentence, "thinks" is the main verb following the subject "Julie."

The main action in a sentence is called the rhetorical action. The rhetorical action is the action that the sentence is about. The main verb and the rhetorical action may not be the same. Generally, when we are trying to identify the rhetorical subject, we first have to identify the rhetorical action.

If the main verb and the rhetorical action are not the same, then the sentence has a problem. In clear writing, they should be the same word. Consider this sentence:

"The long days of summer are when Susan plays in the grass."

In this poorly written sentence, the main verb is "are," which follows the grammatical subject "The long days of summer." However, the main action is not "are." The rhetorical action, what this sentence is about, is "plays."

We want the main verb and the rhetorical action to be the same, so "plays" needs to be the main verb. The subject of "plays" is "Susan." When we use "Susan" as the subject (grammatical and rhetorical), and "plays" as the main verb, we get

"Susan plays in the grass in the long days of summer."

Now, the grammatical subject and the rhetorical subject are the same, the rhetorical action and the main verb are the same, and the entire sentence is clearer, smoother, and more direct.

Day 17: Use the Subject-Verb-Object sentence structure.

The most powerful sentence structure is the Subject-Verb-Object structure. When readers find sentence components are placed in that order, and close to the beginning of the sentence, they will have less difficulty understanding what you have written.

Based on previous strategies, you will want to use the rhetorical subject and the rhetorical action as your subject and main verb. Consider this sentence.

"On the bench in the park sat the man with the brown hat calmly feeding the pigeons."

This sentence has the verb "sat" before the subject "man." When we place items in order, close to the beginning of the sentence, we get

"The man with the brown hat sat on the park bench calmly feeding the pigeons."

If we think "feed" is the rhetorical action, then the object will be "pigeons." Using these, we might get

"The man with the brown hat calmly fed the pigeons from the park bench."

Now we have

Subject: "Man with the brown hat"

Main verb: "fed"

Object: "pigeons"

With these sentence components in order, the sentence is less convoluted and easier to understand.
