Even if the small business owner believes that he or she knows the best keyword phrases that people use to find their business, these assumptions can lead them down a less successful path in their internet marketing efforts.Instead of making assumptions, local Maryland SEO should begin with strategic keyword research based on statistical facts. As with traditional keyword research, the local Maryland SEO keyword research process should begin with a list of the keyword combinations that the business owner suspects are going to bring in leads. For instance, the name of the business, the nearby cities, states, counties, zip codes, and the products or services offered should be tested in various combinations and added to a spread sheet.The goal of this part of the research is to brainstorm all the various terms people could use to search for the business.You should also look for any synonyms and colloquial phrases that people might use for your products and services. Once you have your list of phrases, you can begin to check their search volume and competition. Local Maryland SEO keyword research can be difficult because local phrases have relatively low search volume, and many keyword research services don't have the data, and will report back "insufficient search volume". Local keyword research is important is because using the most searched phrases the business can focus local SEO to get better qualified leads. There are some tools, which can help, in local Maryland SEO keyword research. For instance, Google Insights, Google Adwords Keyword tool and Google trends are free tools that show search traffic and usually have information on local phrases. Other keyword research tools like Trellian's Keyword Discovery have so little data that they tend to skew the results because their data comes from smaller search engines and ISPs, so it is just a subset of the entire internet. Now that Google has started to show local results for broader keyword phrases, by using the searcher's IP addresses to discern their location, it is becoming less necessary to add the city name in your optimization. However Google Insights does show the search volume for the phrase by country, states, and major city. Once you have completed local Maryland SEO keyword research, you still need to decide if these phrases are worthwhile to optimize for. You can do this by looking at how competitive these phrases are. There are two steps to competitive research. First determine how many pages are already optimized and indexed for the phrase, and then check to see whether there is at least one poorly optimized website ranking for the phrase on the first page of Google. Looking for a poorly optimized site can be done quickly by putting the search term in and using a tool to check each site on the first page of Google for incoming links (look for any less than 100), google page rank (look for any less than 3), has the keyword in the title and description META tags (look for any that do not), etc.Indicate each phrase with a weak site indexed. On the same spread sheet you used for your keywords you can add the following fields: Google broad match (search for the phrase in quotes and record the number of results), Intitle (search intitle:"keyword"), Inanchor (search inanchor:"keyword"), intitle & inanchor (search intitle:"keyword" and incancor:"keyword" to show sites with optimized titles and incoming links anchor text), and #1 site for the term. After you finish the spreadsheet you can sort it to show you the best results that will give you the most searchers with the least competition. You can also search to see who your main competition really is, and see if you can rank quickly above the site that is poorly optimized for that phrase. | How to Legally Steal Copy That Converts Like Crazy Posted: 10 Feb 2011 07:30 AM PST Everyone knows better copy gets you more buyers, but professional copywriters are ridiculously expensive for a bootstrapped business, right? And of course every entrepreneur should study copywriting, but it takes time to get really good. You want a great sales page today, not in three years when you’ve finally read all those copywriting books on your bedside table. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get high-quality copy that converts — for free? Well, you can. I’d like to share a process with you that’s straightforward, completely legal (and ethical), and won’t cost you a penny. We now use it in our business for every product we create, and it’s created fantastic results for us. So let’s get started. Step 1: Survey your customersLet’s start by creating a survey. Google Docs forms work well and are totally free. Write a one-paragraph overview of your product, then ask your customers just two questions: “Given what you know so far, make a guess: would you buy this product?” and “What problem do you expect this product to solve for you?” If you’re selling an information or teaching product, you can instead phrase the second question as “What do you hope to learn from this product?” Use a text box for the second question, but limit the first to preset options to something like: no / probably not / maybe / probably / yes Include a note saying that by submitting a survey response, the respondent authorizes you to use it for any purpose. Step 2: Throw out the non-buyersSometimes people who respond “no” or “probably not” will leave interesting comments to the second question, and their feedback can help you position your next offer differently. For this purpose, however, ignore them. They won’t buy, so don’t let them distract you. Throw out all the “no” and “probably not” answers. Step 3: Throw out the sure thingsThis one may seem a little counterintuitive at first. But your landing page doesn’t need any copy to convince a “yes” to buy — it just needs a buy button. The point of a landing page is to convert “maybe” and “probably” to “yes”. Set aside the “yes” responses and focus only on people who said “maybe” and “probably.” Step 4: Copy and paste.Most copywriting is making your best guess at what motivates your customers. But if you just ask them, you can eliminate the guesswork. Your customers will tell you exactly what motivates them, and then you can repeat it back to them in their own words. Copy and paste snippets of the remaining responses — those “maybe” and “probably” buyers — into your landing page. These survey responses form the core of your Features and Benefits section. Step 5: Rephrase and generalizeRephrase “I” as “you” and “my” as “your.” For example, if a customer writes, “I want to know how I can get out of debt,” you might rephrase as “You’ll learn how you can get out of debt.” Then take the specifics and make them general enough that your target market will find them relevant. If you get “I want to learn how to keep my obnoxious aunt Betty from getting on my case when I visit her for Christmas,” generalize it to “You’ll learn how to keep your obnoxious relatives from getting on your case when you visit them for the holidays.” Don’t generalize too much — for example, don’t generalize “obnoxious” to “troublesome,” or try to find a fancier way to say “get on your case.” The whole point of this process is to get your customers’ own words onto your landing page, so only generalize personal things that apply to just one individual. Step 6: Profit!That’s it. When you go directly to your customer, find out the benefits and features they’re looking for, and use their own words to describe them (and, of course, to be sure those needs are addressed in your product), you’ll become a marketing genius. You’ll spend less time writing copy and your conversion rates will soar. (And of course, you can make it work even better if you split test it.) Good copywriters follow well-established best practices, studying sites like this one to learn more techniques that pull a reader in and motivate action. Great copywriters delve into the psychology of persuasion, and make sure their copy is presented with effective design to make it even more engaging. But the best copywriters don't stop there. They know that those are just the factors that get you started. The best copywriters continue to radically improve their copy over time. They know how to create copy that works even when it defies common sense. They find the "magic words" in headlines that will never be revealed in any swipe file. How do they do that? It's not a secret technique or some special knowledge they learn from a guru at the top of the mountain. The truth is, great copywriters use split testing to radically improve their copy over time. You may have heard of split testing, but unfortunately not a lot of us actually understand it properly or use it for conversion rate optimization. (Kind of the way everyone's a social media guru whether or not they actually have a clue about how social media really works.) So what the heck is split testing?Split testing is not a buzzword and it's certainly not a fad. It's very popular among large Internet companies (Amazon, Groupon, Google, etc.). In fact, almost all of them conduct thousands (or even tens of thousands) of split tests to increase sales and conversion rates on their websites and landing pages. They have been doing split testing for years because it is a simple, methodical way to increase online conversion rate. The concept of split testing is quite simple: In a split test, you create one or more variations of a landing page and then randomly split traffic amongst them. Meanwhile you measure which variation led to maximum conversion for the result that you were looking for. Adopt the better performing landing page. Rinse and repeat. For example, if you have a landing page that sells a parrot training eBook, how do you decide which headline to use? Should you use Teach your parrot nifty tricks in 24 hours (version A)? Or should you use Your parrot speaks 20 words by tomorrow or your money back (version B)? You could ask on twitter, and get hundreds of very knowledgeable guesses. But that's all they would be. To find out, you would simply create two versions of landing page using one of those headlines for each. Send 50% of your traffic to version A and 50% to version B, and observe which version converted better. (Since there are usually two versions involved, split testing is also known as A/B testing.) What should I split test on a landing page?The easy answer to an easy question: everything! You never know what might be most influential to your sales and conversions so you should split test all aspects of your landing page copy. Asking what to split test isn't really the right question, then. The right question is: What should I test first? You have to prioritize the most influential aspects of a landing page, the elements that tend to produce the biggest changes. I am the founder of a split testing product called Visual Website Optimizer with thousands of users, which gave me the privilege of observing thousands of split tests and their results from a front-row seat. That experience showed me some of the key elements (in order of importance) that you should test on your landing page:

How many out of three did you get right? Unless you have already read Visual Website Optimizer case studies (or Googled them) it'd be pretty hard for you to have guessed all three of them correctly. In fact, if you guess randomly there is only 4% chance that you will get all three of them correct. Logic won't get you to the best-converting copy.
