Internet has become a vital tool in politics, business, social interaction, education, etc. As it is you can’t afford to be ignorant of the power of the Internet. You must show your presence if you own a website.

It is not enough to be on the Internet, where you are determines whether people will find you or not. If you type in a simple search on the browser, you will see thousands of possibilities that will appear. The normal thing people do is to click through the first ten (at most) and get going.

2. Blogging: You can use blogs to tell people where you are and what you do. Blogging takes a lot of efforts but it will give you great results. If you don’t have all the time to do this, get someone to help.

4. Community relevance: When you relate well with your community, people will want to know more about you. You can do this through voluntary work, donation, membership of a local sports club, etc.

There are literally millions of blogs out there in cyberspace so why shouldn't you be joining in on the blogging fun?

There are many reasons why you should consider starting a blog. Many free blog sites exist so there's no financial commitment to make. Register, choose a theme and begin posting. It's as easy as that. As mentioned above, blogging is a good way to share your life with others. Families set up blogs where each member has a chance to post updates to let relatives near and far know what's going on in their lives. Include photos and videos and it's almost like being there with your loved ones. If you're looking to change careers or are currently out of work you should consider creating a blog. Ever had a great idea, and then started to doubt yourself?

Or maybe you've already executed on that great idea, but you're hesitating to launch. Maybe it's an article, or an ebook, or a completely new site concept.

How can you be sure it will work? Should you ask for feedback?

I'll answer both of those questions in this article, but first I need to tell you a couple of stories from the nutty worlds of music and film.

Let's start with a band called Wilco.

Wilco gets the shaft

In 2000 and early 2001, Wilco recorded a selection of songs for a fourth studio album.

Signed to Reprise Records (a subsidiary of Warner Music), the band was continuing to shift away from its "alt country" roots toward a more experimental alternative rock sound.

This made the folks at Reprise nervous. After a shakeup at the top executive level of the label, a guy named Mio Vukovic was assigned to monitor the progress of the new album and offer suggestions.

Let's just say that Vukovic wasn't much impressed with what he heard, and Wilco wasn't much impressed with his suggestions. This resulted in the band being unceremoniously canned by the label.

Wilco negotiated its contractual divorce from Reprise. Part of the deal allowed the band to keep the master tapes and full rights to the unreleased songs.

The band was down, but not out.

Nobody knows anything

Before we get back to Wilco, let's take a trip to Hollywood.

"Nobody knows anything" is the most famous line from the book Adventures in the Screen Trade by screenwriter William Goldman.

That's because it's the truth.

Goldman isn't saying (contrary to popular belief) that Hollywood is filled (exclusively) with idiots. He means that prior to a movie’s release, no one has any real idea how well a film will do.

Smart people in Hollywood seek writers, producers, and directors who have a proven knack for being right more often than wrong. Because that's the best you can hope for.

The same is true for anything designed to entertain, educate, delight, motivate or move people. The best you can hope for is take your best guess and do your best work.

This is how online content marketing works, too.

Welcome to the media business.

That's not to say people won't have opinions about the viability of your ideas.

Oh boy, will they ever have opinions. Everyone has one of those, right?

Let's get back to Wilco.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Later in 2001, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy decided to stream the "album without a home" from the band's website.

The move was prompted in part to curb piracy of leaked mp3s, but it also let the fans decide if they liked the collection of songs known as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

People did like it. But that's not all.

Suddenly, over thirty record labels offered to sign the band. Wilco went with Nonesuch Records, which is ironically also a subsidiary of Warner Music (who says the music business is screwed up?).

Here's what happened next:

  • Yankee Hotel Foxtrot remains Wilco’s highest charting album, even though the band won two Grammys for its next album.
  • Yankee Hotel Foxtrot remains Wilco’s best selling album, even though the band's status has grown with its two subsequent releases.
  • Yankee Hotel Foxtrot topped numerous critic's "Best album of 2002" lists, and was named one of the 100 greatest albums of all time by Q Magazine.

Nobody knows anything … except the audience.

Put it out there

This doesn't mean you shouldn't do your research.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't relentlessly think it through.

This certainly doesn't mean this particular idea of yours will succeed.

Here's what it means:

  • Online, there are no gate keepers to shut you down. This is why the social media has changed so much so quickly and why you might be missing the opportunity of your lifetime.
  • The audience decides what's worthy across the board — in film, music, books, and any other form of content that's produced by the imagination of a determined individual or group. It's always been this way, but now the relationship is direct thanks to the Internet.
  • Consider feedback and apply fundamentals, but ultimately realize that your boss, your spouse, your colleagues, and your high school friends don't know anything. That also applies to me and everyone else who gives you advice.

You'll never absolutely, positively know until you put it out there.

For the most part, readers are not looking for Earth-shattering new facts or stunningly profound insights. They want answers they can jump on-board with easily, answers that already make sense to them.

They want bite-sized thoughts, and they want you to dig deeper only occasionally. They want to absorb your ideas right away, and only take the full PhD when they feel like it.

2. Prognostication

People have always looked for fortune-tellers, and they always will.

Just ask Seth. Or Brian. Or Darren.

Why should you tell readers and buyers about a future they may be scared to face head-on?

Because in being the one who'll stare far ahead, you gain a reputation as a leader. Because in sticking your neck out, you teach others to view the world just as boldly as you.

Because when you jump to the stage and announce that you see things in a new way, you get your best chance to sweep others up in your vision.

Who knows, you might even change the world.

3. Social proof

If you're looking for a stamp of approval that your readers and customers will buy (and keep on buying), then look no further than social proof.

The traditional definition of social proof is a bit narrow. If lots of other people like you and say so, more people will start to like you, and buy from you, or read your work.

"I like you because other people like you."

That's certainly true for Guy Kawasaki. He’s become a bestseller, and his blog posts, Tweets, and books are read by tens of thousands of people, who tell tens of thousands more. It's a beautiful word-of-mouth cycle.

But there's more to social proof than big numbers.

Today we buy Guy because thousands of other people buy Guy. But before there were thousands, there was Steve.

Steve Jobs "bought" Guy — he made him Chief Evangelist for Apple back when Apple was more of a geek dream than the mega-business anti-hero that it is today.

(Okay, Apple’s still a geek dream.)

People first got caught up in Guy's enthusiasm because a smart dude at a little company believed in him, and then that little company took off.

You may or may not have that kind of luck, but you’ll never know unless you find some little companies (or bloggers, authors, or speakers) who believe in you right now.

Start showcasing the people who like you, even if it's one at a time. Don't wait until there are thousands who drool at your feet.

The beauty of having thousands of fans is that they create a second wave of social pressure — fans don't want to be left behind by not knowing about Guy's latest. Fans do want to hang with the fun people, to belong to the group who's read it and put it to use and can quote their favorite lines.

If you're old enough to remember when only those cool new sneakers called Nikes would do in junior high, then you know the feeling well.

Maybe you haven't invented a rockin' new type of sport shoe, but you can still invoke this feeling.

Uncover what's cool about buying from you and emphasize it. Before there are thousands, imagine who they'll be, and then draw them to your in-crowd — just like Guy in 1983, when Nikes were everywhere, but Apples were only a fruit you bit into.

4. Past performance

Past performance is related to social proof, but takes your work a step further.

Social proof is other people convincing new folks to give you a try. But past performance — a demonstrated history of showing up and being remarkable over time — clinches the deal.

Past performance helps people convince themselves … because despite what those financial disclaimers say, past performance very often is an indicator of future worth.

In other words, if you've done good work before, you're probably going to do good work going forward. Crowing (humbly) about your past removes risk from your potential new customer's mind.

Now there’s no doubt about it, consistency over time is going to take … time. There is no sneaky way around that. Guy began the part of his career that we usually hear about at Apple. He moved on to become an entrepreneur, a successful venture capitalist, an in-demand speaker, and the author of ten books.

For some folks, that's true. Some people have no problem writing, speaking, and selling with plenty of authentic verve and personality. But for many, letting that unique personality out in a natural way will be a project that will take them months or years.

4 Ways to Avoid My Blog Content Sucks...Syndrome!

Interested in finding ways to ensure that your blog content does not suck? Do you ever wonder why your blog just does not seem to be getting the attention you think it should? How do you ensure that your readers are going to jump with delight the next time you publish an article?

If you have been around some blogs lately, this is a true dilemma that many bloggers face but I have found that if you get back to some basics, this issue can be easily resolved. Let’s review together, what I have learned as of late.

Be Consistent in Your Branding Message

When you start your blog, you need to establish what your key message and your niche is going to be about.

Are your articles in alignment with your chosen niche and branding message? Just having a great heading won't cut it. To learn more about the brand message gap in blogs, research the blogs within your niche, note those gaps and then write about those in your blog. You also need to know that appearing on the first page of Google, as many courses claim to teach you, is just not enough today. Once the reader visits your blog, you have to be able to keep their attention too. Imagine that concept…hey? :-)

If you determine that your specific niche is dogs, then make sure that 80% of your articles are about dogs! That would seem to be common sense but sometimes it is easy to forget this when you are searching desperately to find something to write about.

Have Fresh and Original Content

Well that sounds easy enough. However, just like learning to ride a bike was a process, so is blog writing. It is an art and a science and requires skills and discipline to grow into an established blog with an established readership.

Keeping your content original means researching a subject and then applying that subject to your own experiences and knowledge of life. It does not mean re-writing someone else's content using one of those content article spinners. You need keywords that will attract attention but you also need to have good content around those keywords. Search Engine rankings only become useful if you have a blog or website worth visiting.

Adding your unique personality and experience to a topic is exactly what your readers want. They want to know how this subject relates to you. Remember people love to learn about you in a way that is valuable to them. You are solving one of their problems by sharing your experiences.

Blog Content Frequency

Post at least once a week and preferably two to three times for increased returns on your efforts with the search engines.

Have a Strong Call to Action

You must tell your readers what you want them to do when they have read your article. Every piece of blog content is a marketing opportunity. But here is where most people go wrong. They write articles about products and services and put a link in the article or at the end expecting you to buy whatever service they are promoting. Now, if you are an established blogger, this may work because your readers have already developed trust with you; however, if you are building up your reputation as a blogger and establishing yourself within your niche, please don't do this. It will push people away from you and you will lose the goodwill you have created to date. Offer them an opportunity instead… to comment, subscribe to your RSS feed or 0pt-in to your smart and FREE giveaway. This will aid the building of a long-term relationship rather than a short-term sell.

I fell in love with words at a very early age, reading, writing reports, articles, newsletters and proofreading but it took a dramatic event in my job to make me re-evaluate what I was doing with words.

I have always enjoyed reading and writing and can't think of anything better to do on holiday than to take a really good book with me so that I can switch off from the hustle and bustle of work and family to enter a different world created by a well crafted novel.

Article Writing in a Time Crunch

As many of you might know, this is far from a full time job for me. I am up at 5am to read and go to the gym, then from 7am to 4pm I am making the world better at my full time job, THEN I run my other businesses after that…. oh, did I mention I also have a wife and 3 kids to tend to?

Anyways, needless to say, I need to create as much as possible content in as short of time period as possible. I have found that writing down (pen and paper) the information I have read/heard about is the best way for me to retain information. So, I write down valuable tips, websites, names to research, and content as I am reading and listening to podcasts.

Once it comes time to deliver my content to the world wide web, I have a nice layout of ideas and topics to elaborate on. If you just jump into the article with one topic and no other fore-thought, you could be there for days trying to complete your article.

Once your ideas are laid out, you can filter through the information and find the pieces most relative to your article. I typically choose between 3 and 6 pieces of information to write on. This will help limit the amount of time spent on the article. I call this part, “the setup.”

Next step is to organize your thoughts. A helpful tool for me would be to use bullet points. This will help emphasize your ideas and organize them in a nice flowing manner. Other ways to format your article can be; using a numbered list, vocabulary words, or flow chart (step-by-step).

Once these first three steps have been taken, you should be at least 30-40% done with your article. The rest is, “filler.” Move forward with examples, personal experience, references, case studies, and more examples. If something causes you to become distracted from your article, take a minute to go get some water, feed the dog, or wash your hair…. don’t try and force your words. You will get frustrated and when you finally come back to that article, you will change that part anyways.

Everyone has been affected by the state of the U.S. economy and has seen how slow job growth, lack of consumer spending and a decrease in profits has derailed some businesses. Should you be optimistic?

According to the CFO Outlook Survey, a substantial number of chief financial officers say yes. The survey, distributed by Zicklin School of Business (Baruch College) in conjunction with Financial Executives International (FEI), noticed a significant increase in CFO confidence when it came to talk of hiring new employees in 2011. According to those who participated in the survey, when it comes to business, their optimism levels are high.

Who's Hiring?

  • 64% – Number of CFO's projecting to hire supplementary employees within the following six months
  • Ford Motor – Plans to hire an estimated 7000 workers in a two year time period
  • Lowe's – Confirmed they will be hiring between 8000 to 10,000 employees slated for weekend sales associate positions

What's to be Expected

A percentage of CFO's are still cautiously optimistic when it comes to their own spending tactics. A majority of survey participants felt that growth in revenue may still be a challenge in the beginning of 2011 but they felt an improvement was on the way.

  • 10.5% – Projected growth in revenue
  • 16.6% – Projected growth in earnings
  • 47% – Number of CFO's continuing to spend cautiously
  • 30% – Number of CFO's spending without fear
  • 69% – Number of CFO's investing in technology to increase capital

Areas Showing Highest Optimism Rates

Overall, full-time work in the United States is expected to increase by 2% in 2011. Employment optimism in the U.S. has fueled nations from around the world to expect a boost in their own economic outlooks for 2011. Which sectors are expected to do the most hiring? The technology and the service/consulting industries, especially research and development and advertising sectors, should see a spike in hiring as well as investments.

Why are CFO's focusing on these industry sectors? These areas are consistently expressing signs of economic improvement and continue to rebound from the nation's economic crisis. In addition, both growth and return investments involving the technology and service/consulting industries are predicted to steadily improve. These sectors have established roots in the United States and do not heavily rely on international sales and foreign suppliers as other business sectors do. Local businesses are more likely to benefit from such measures than from U.S. companies that deal mostly in foreign markets.

As 2011 pushes onward and upward, CFO optimism continues to spread, thanks to signs that America is about to bounce back from the worst economic catastrophe since the Great Depression.
