Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger’s The Paper Stage

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 02:24 PM PDT

[by Ken Hunt, London] Forty years or so ago, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger released their most recondite project, the two-volume Paper Stage . It was reconstructions of the first Elizabethan Age's theatre for the second Elizabethan Age. The original peddlers of these more unauthorised than guerrilla playlets in song left few traces and fewer fingerprints. All that survived was the printed page. Theirs was street theatre, the equivalent of graffiti artist Banksy's Mona Lisa with a rocket launche

Customize your Twitter Page for Maximum Promotion

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 02:11 PM PDT

Let's face it. Saying "I'm on Twitter" is not just a trend in Internet marketing. It is a new way of exchanging business cards. By providing a link to your Twitter account, you are inviting visitors to view your daily activities, thoughts on current events, random musings and who you think they should follow on Fridays. If you were to post your Twitter site on your Web site or business card (i.e. www.twitter.com/SpiderWriters), what image does your Twitter page give to your site visitors? Just as your company's Web page should have an individual style that reflects your professionalism and goals, so should your Twitter page.

Target Your Tourism Marketing Toward Destination Weddings

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 02:09 PM PDT

In a tough economy, few businesses have the assurance that they will stay afloat. One industry, though, might be recession proof: the wedding industry. Couples spend more than $20,000 for a wedding on average, and most spend 50% more than their intended budget. Before brides start crunching the numbers for flowers, cakes, dresses, bows and candlesticks, they first have to decide on the venue. Although most brides look to local churches and reception halls, an estimated 272,000 weddings a year are destination weddings. If the bride chooses to go this route, narrowing down where she wants to get married can be a simple as a quick Google search. How does your CVB or tourism bureau promote itself to grab her attention?

Tired of the hassle of airports? Inspecting each item you pack in FAA regulated bags, walking through lines of security with your shoes off, only to wait even more in the terminal before boarding a stuffy plane with tiny seats isn't something you look forward to when you think of a vacation. In addition, bad experiences on board can set the mood for the rest of the trip, and let's not even think about what you'll do if your baggage gets misplaced. Consider traveling by rail.

Incorporate Facebook Into Your Travel Marketing Plan

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 02:04 PM PDT

In addition to your marketing Web site, your CVB or tourism bureau has the opportunity to be seen by more than 250 million people all over the world at any given time. This idea of increasing your Web traffic may seem complicated and time-consuming, but it is much easier than you may think. According to Facebook's statistics, more than 120 million users log in each day, contributing to more than 5 billion minutes being spent each day worldwide on the site. Despite what you may think about Facebook being targeted for teens and young adults, the current fastest growing demographic is people ages 35 and older. Combine that with the Domestic Travel Market Report statistics that the average age of a domestic traveler is 46 (and that 75% of Americans travel for leisure) and you don't need another reason to join Facebook.

How To Write When You Think You Can’t - Dumb Little Man

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 09:32 AM PDT

Dumb-dumb bullets - July 2009 - Armed Forces Journal - JM: Yes, powerpoint sucks.

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 09:21 AM PDT

Unfortunately, as soon as they graduate, our people return to a world driven by a tool that is the antithesis of thinking: PowerPoint. Make no mistake, PowerPoint is not a neutral tool — it is actively hostile to thoughtful decision-making. It has fundamentally changed our culture by altering the expectations of who makes decisions, what decisions they make and how they make them. While this may seem to be a sweeping generalization, I think a brief examination of the impact of PowerPoint will support this statement.

Writing content That Ranks Well on Google

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 02:14 PM PDT

Once upon a time, long long ago, there was something called SEO copywriting and there were people called SEO copywriters who appeared to have honed supernatural word skills and they could place just the right keywords in just the right places and measures, and even in the densities that were just right for magical top rankings on the any search engine you could think of. And that's all you needed… or at least that's what was (and still is) publicized all over

There is no doubt that keywords still matter, even more so in titles. Search engines by and large choose to zero in on the words the masses are looking for. But as SEO pro Josh Caldon will tell you, "measurements like keyword density are useless, although general frequency can help rankings."

So here's the deal… most of what limits the ranking status of any particular page is due to what goes on off the page, in the form of links from other websites. Developing those links naturally has become the hardestmost hardest piece of SEO, which is why 2006 saw the powerful growth of social media marketing as a way to draw links with compelling content.

That's why any authentic SEO copywriter is simply a writer who has a bent for tuning in to the wants and desires of the target audience. And due to the pursuit of links, those wants and wants have to be nailed well before you'll ever show in the search engines.

As I've written, the same emotional forces that impress us to buy can also cause us to link, bookmark, and Digg. The context is unlike, as are the subtleties, but it's still a thing of offering compelling benefits in the form of content.

"Ask yourself what creates value for your users," says Google. As those brainy engineers continue to diligently make improved algorithms, combined with people-powered social media tagging and blog-driven links, copywriters with a genius for prompting link response and conversions will become vital members of any search engine marketing effort.

To me, optimization (at least of the white hat type) is the page tweaking that can be accomplished after you've managed to draw a healthy measure of quality links that demonstrate the value of the content. Small things can make a big difference when you're trying to move from the third page of the Google results to the first, or from position 8 to 4,3, 2 or 1.

Of course the critical ingredients of a search-friendly site should be in place. But beyond that, tweaking a page for higher rankings before you've determined that the content is persuasive to people is a little like putting on your prom dress to stay home alone and watch ‘Desperate Housewives’.

Web Article Writing Secret #42

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 06:37 AM PDT

Try This At Home
By Michael Low

Right now, without wasting another second, I am going to do something that, two years ago, I would NEVER have dreamed of doing.

I am going to write a blog post without giving what I am writing about a single thought.

That’s right. I am doing what is commonly known as …

Thoughtless Writing!

I’m not even going to edit what I write. This is, by the way, a great way (and a fast way) to create a lot of great content for your blog or web site or whatever.

And, interestingly, because it is thoughtless writing, it will probably be … one of the best pieces of writing I have posted on the Internet for about three weeks.

Why is that?

The reason thoughtless writing is so good is because it taps into that unconscious part of you. The part where connections between ideas come together in an effortless symphony of creativity.

When this happens … you get what is commonly referred to as …

Clarity!

And clarity, my friend, is what sets a good piece of verbiage apart from the not so good.

The other reason why this piece of writing will probably be the best piece of writing I have written in three weeks is because …

Three weeks ago I posted an article that brought in a ton of traffic. And the reason it brought in a ton of traffic is because I used a technique that does two things:

  1. It locks readers eyes to the page. And …
    .
  2. Holds them spell-bound — with a spell they cast over their own minds — from the very first paragraph to the last.

When you use this technique your ability to get people to not only read your articles … but … to … click through to your website or sales page … instantly increases by multiples.

And that’s what my article three weeks ago did for one of my partner sites.

And … that’s why that article (written three weeks ago) will be hard to beat.

Am I making myself clear? Do you follow what I am saying here? You do? Good!

Let’s press on.

Did you know there are approximately 7,642,810 thousand articles (and blog posts) published on the web every week? And do you know why most of those articles are published?

The reason is because the writer (or publisher) of those articles is hoping to get their article seen by enough people (and search engines) so as to create a flood of traffic to their web site … where … they hope to sell those people something.

The problem is:

The great majority – about 95% of those articles – are worthless.

And why are they worthless?

Because they don’t strike a cord with a significant number of readers. And, as a result, they don’t have any major impact on the lives of the business owners who write (or publish) them.

In other words, they don’t produce the kinds of relationships with readers that …

Turn Into Money!

(Woops! Did I say “money”?) Honey, if you aren’t writing for money, life ain’t gonna be funny. (See what silliness happens when you write without thinking. But, alas, I digress.

Now where was I? That’s right. We were talking about getting traffic with articles – a subject with which I have a great deal of experience because of my work with my partner sites.

Yes, sure, some of those articles get some worthwhile traffic. But what you really want is …

Thousands of visitors rushing to your website to
snatch up everything you have to offer!

But is this a realistic goal for your writing? I’m glad you asked. Here’s my answer: Not only do I think it IS a realistic goal … but … I think it should be your ONLY goal.

And here is why: Words are the currency of the web. Look around. What is the web? It’s made up of words. Billions upon billions of words. Plus a few pictures. But even the pictures are telling thousands of words, right?

You get my point.

Besides, writing is a transaction between you and your reader. The value of the transaction depends upon the value of the ideas you write about. Given this fact, and since you are going to write anyway, why not make your ideas extra valuable and get paid (in readership, loyalty, and cold hard cash) abundantly well?

In fact, that’s my tip for the day: Web Writing Secret #42: Write well and get paid well!

And … make sure you try “thoughtless writing” some time. It’s fun.

If you don’t do it for yourself, try doing it for one of the millions of people who need good content written each day … but … who … don’t know how to do it.

Bye for now.

PS: It seems to me, with all those websites out there needing content, there are probably a lot of opportunities for someone like you to get good enough at writing to do some of that writing for them. What do you think?

Start at the Beginning - Choosing a Blog Identity

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 05:14 AM PDT

Let’s start at the beginning. All journeys start somewhere. To have a freelance business you need to have a way to meet clients, showcase your work and communicate. A blog is a great way to start. Remember this challenge is about starting out by spending NO money whatsoever, so a free blog is necessary. We are here, at WordPress.com with our free blog. An apt title has been chosen that gives potential readers and subscribers an idea about the purpose of this blog.

This blog is not only the journey, it is the method – the business itself. The business premise is to freelance as a writer hence the choice of the title: Freelance – Work at Home. The niche is freelance writing.

Once you’ve got your blog you need to make it stand out. At the moment the theme of the blog is quite the blank canvas. Part of the learning curve on this journey is to learn how to use WordPress and to learn how to use html, CSS etc to full effect to give this blog a unique theme and identity (without spending a cent). Learning on the job is always a big incentive and motivator for picking things up quickly!

The internet is huge and there are LOTS of blogs already out there. We need to move quickly and to find an identity and to learn some html etc. The great thing about blogging is you are not alone and you do not have to find all the answers yourself. Although daunting it is not impossible to succeed even with the huge amount of competition out there. This is where a unique identity will help.

You need to have a vision in place for your business. What is your business? Is there a niche? Who are you trying to reach? What do you want to offer them (products or services)?

How can you develop that unique identity? A great article that gives you 7 Ways to Develop a Unique Brand for our Blog can be found here. Go and read the article and think about what you can take from it to apply to your particular blog.

So, what lessons have been learned from this and what do we need to do now?

First steps: Choose a niche/business (more information to follow on how to do this).

Sign up for a free blog (if you are trying the no budget challenge).

Give your blog a title that signifies the purpose and identity of the business.

Create a business plan – what you want to achieve, how you want to achieve it, why,

targets (short and long term), identify your target clients/audience.

Create a notebook/binder to contain your ideas, thoughts, jottings & paperwork.

Think about how to use your blog to express your identity, showcase your work, attract readers and

clients.

Start to read – blogs, articles, books etc. about your chosen niche (subscribe to RSS feeds for those sites

you particularly like and find most useful, bookmark where necessary so that you can find the sites

again).

There is LOTS of information out there. Much of it is free but a lot of it costs money. This journey is about using what we can find free. Obviously, eventually there will come a time when money needs to be spent. Some people will reach that point before others. It may be that you do have a budget (even if it is a small one) that you have put aside to help you start up your business. Recommendations will be made for resources that will help you in setting up your business. It will always be made clear which resources are free and which need to be paid for. Reviews will be given wherever possible.

It is hoped that a set of free worksheets to help set up your business journal will be ready by the beginning of next week.
